New Orleans Saints

  • The draft of 2006 was supposed to be a highly stocked draft... Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Matt Leinart... now Young and Leinart are riding the pine with limited chance to get back on the field as a starter with the team that drafted him. Bush didn't find the NFL as easy to run through as he did in college. Young and Leinart each are behind veterans who just signed a two year deal to start for the Titans and Cardinals so neither of the youngsters appears to be getting on the field soon.

If Leinart would have come out as a junior he may have been the #1 choice instead of Alex Smith, who for a number of reason is deciding if he wants to redo his deal and try and compete for starting spot but most likely be the backup as well.

Not so easy for teams drafting high and investing a lot of money in these quarterbacks. Will the Lions see this or Matt Ryan? Is one of the tackles their future on the left side and a safer pick like Jake Long? Increasingly the top of the draft is looking for safety considering the money involved...
  • The Saints have signed former Bills corner Jabari Greer to a 4 year deal after failing to sign Ron Bartell of the Rams over the weekend...
  • The New Orleans Saints have resigned right tackle Jon Stinchcomb to a 5 year deal. They had been looking at other free agents but decided to keep their own. Stinchcomb has been solid and durable on the right side and was cheaper than the other options the team considered. Not having seen the dollar amount of the deal it was likely a good choice on their part...
  • The Saints are also looking at Jaguars tackle Khalif Barnes. He would replace Jon Stinchcomb who is a free agent and getting a look from the 49ers...
  • It was surprising to see Saints LB Jonathan Vilma make it to free agency. The Saints should have locked him long ago after getting him from the Jets last year, but in the end they kept him. He got a 5 year deal worth $34 million with half of it guaranteed. So now they have retained their leading tackler and center piece of their defense. Next up is likely former Rams corner Ron Bartell...
