Tennessee Titans

  • The draft of 2006 was supposed to be a highly stocked draft... Reggie Bush, Vince Young, Matt Leinart... now Young and Leinart are riding the pine with limited chance to get back on the field as a starter with the team that drafted him. Bush didn't find the NFL as easy to run through as he did in college. Young and Leinart each are behind veterans who just signed a two year deal to start for the Titans and Cardinals so neither of the youngsters appears to be getting on the field soon.

If Leinart would have come out as a junior he may have been the #1 choice instead of Alex Smith, who for a number of reason is deciding if he wants to redo his deal and try and compete for starting spot but most likely be the backup as well.

Not so easy for teams drafting high and investing a lot of money in these quarterbacks. Will the Lions see this or Matt Ryan? Is one of the tackles their future on the left side and a safer pick like Jake Long? Increasingly the top of the draft is looking for safety considering the money involved...
  • The Broncos flirtation with Matt Cassell didn't work, but they did add another quarterback to the mix. Former Bucs and Titans QB Chris Simms signed a 2 year deal worth $6 million but back up the crybaby Jay Cutler. Simms had plenty of suitors and unless Cutler refuses to come out of the house and play SImms will be on the bench in Denver. There was some discussion earlier that he could get a chance to start in Chicago but that didn't pan out. The Titans wanted him back but with Kerry Collins and Vince Young around there wasn't much space.

As for Cutler is has been said already by plenty of others, but he needs to shut up...
  • The Titans have signed a pair of free agents... former Steelers WR Nate Washington to a 6 year $27 million deal with $9 million guaranteed. He will replace Brandon Jones who signed with the 49ers. They also signed former Bucs DT Jovan Haye to a 4 year $16 million to improve the defensive line that had a gaping hole. Haye is a solid player the man he takes over for won't be easy to replace...
  • The Lions kept dealing Saturday... QB Jon Kitna has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys who have been looking for a backup to Tony Romo. No word on what the Lions get in return, but likely not much.

The Lions also announced the signing of former Titans CB Eric King to a 2 year deal...
  • The 49ers have signed former Titans WR Brandon Jones to a 5 year deal worth $16.5 million with $5.4 million guaranteed. The 4th year vet has deep speed and the 49ers hope he can help stretch he field to keep defenses honest against the run while still providing a physical presence. He won't have a starting job locked up but will compete with their young receivers and possibly Isaac Bruce if he doesn't retire...
  • The Titans have resigned their nickel cornerback Vincent Fuller to a 3 year deal. Fuller had some interest around the league but decided to stay put and the team kept a key player...
  • Former Titans WR Brandon Jones is in San Francisco and could be signed before the end of the day. Jones has decent speed and the 49ers have long needed someone to stretch the field (and be productive), but they better not overpay for him. Jones would compete for a spot there but is unlikely to put up big numbers for them much like Bryant Johnson last year...
