The 49ers quickly moved on after losing out on Kurt Warner and have signed former Chiefs QB Damon Huard to a one year deal. They only have Shaun Hill under contract for their upcoming workouts and needed another arm. Huard will compete for a backup spot at best if he makes the team. Alex Smith still needs to re-do his contract before he will work out with the team. The 49ers also signed former Redskins DT Demetric Evans to a 2 year $3.8 million deal to play the left end spot in their 3-4 and gave safety Mark Roman permission to look for a trade. The team plans on him being a backup next year but will listen to offers... SI's Peter King is reporting the trade for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel was one deal, and the cost the Chiefs had to pay... their second round pick this year, #34 overall. If this is true then the Chiefs got an absolute steal. King says that was likely near the best offer and Bill Belichick was helping both Pioli and Cassel in the Bill Parcell's way. That would be awful nice of him, but a hugely one sided deal for the Chiefs. It does give the Patriots 3 second round picks this year which they can use to help retool their roster, but it is hard to imagine they couldn't have gotten much more... New Chiefs GM Scott Pioli is making his mark on his new team, not only bringing the Patriot way... but the Patriot's players. For the second straight day he has completed a trade with his former team, this time acquiring QB Matt Cassel. Yesterday it was Mike Vrabel to help lead the new defense. Piolo knows Cassel obviously and didn't want to go fishing in the draft for the next Tom Brady. Cassel is under the franchise tag and will be getting a new long term deal that will be costly, but now the team is starting to have a look to it, one of Pioli's making. No word on what the Chiefs gave up for either Vrabel or Cassel yet. It will be expensive but likely worth it as the Chiefs try to improve quickly... Another trade today... this time familiar players. The Chiefs have acquired LB Mike Vrabel from the Patriots for draft picks. Vrabel is a former All Pro but his play went down last year. He is getting up there in years but new GM Scott Pioli is hoping he can help with the new defense and teach the younger player the new approach in town... The Kansas City Chiefs are getting younger... they have released linebacker Donnie Edwards, CB Patrick Surtain and QB Damon Huard. In doing so they created more cap space for a team that now has close to half of the cap available to spend... Well enough hanging around as the Chefs finally dumped Herm Edwards today and now new GM Scott Pioli gets to hire his guy, but who will it be. All we can say is it better be quicker than this drawn out ordeal was. Herm was done, let's face it he is a good coach but they needed a change and Pioli has to make his mark. He has more pressure on him than any GM in a long. Teams have seen him as a potential savior, now he has to prove he isn't Matt Millen with Bill Belichick around to help... The Kansas City Chiefs made the bold hire and finally were the team to get Scott Pioli to leave the Patriots and become their new GM, and what has he done. Well, nothing. Herm Edwards is still swinging on the vine waiting to know if he will be retained and by now he would look like a sorry plan B if they keep him. Pioli has messed this up in a huge way. Of all the teams that have been after him over the years, not sure I would have picked the Chiefs right now if I was him but too late to worry about that, do something already. Mike Shanahan, no I don't think so but you have to admit it would be funny. He went from the Raiders to the Broncos and then if he landed in Kansas City. Talk about adding to the rivalry. That said, let it go. Not sure who the right choice but I know what the wrong move is and they are making it every day...
