Quarterbacks going

<articlebody>Well we called it a while ago that the Packers and Dolphins could go QB, after Brohm goes to Green Bay, the Dolphins took Michigan QB Chad Henne. So much for John Beck who was taken in round two last year. This is the problem with the quick hook on coaches as everyone wants their guys and run different offenses and defenses and ends up wasting top picks and player from the previous regimes </articlebody>

Packers add a quarterback

<articlebody>The Green Bay Packers are no longer Brett Favre's team... in round two they added a backup or challenger to Aaron Rodgers... Louisville's Brian Brohm who could have been a top 10 pick i not for a down senior year. He didn't get a lot of help and the whole team struggled. Brohm is a good fit in the West Coast offense, but Rodgers can't be happy.. as if it isn't enough to replace Brett Favre... now he has a high second round pick sitting behind him. The Packers needed a backup as they have nothing behind Rodgers and he has shown himself to be injury prone... a bit different than Favre. Every time Rodgers has gotten into a game he has been hurt either in the game or last year in practice the week after... The Packers got a good pick, a great value but oh boy just like Philly last year </articlebody>

Jaguars move up

<articlebody>The Jaguars added Derrick Harvey in round one to help their pass rush but it appears they wanted more... they traded up with the Bucs in round two to get Quentin Groves, who is an undersized end and will be a situational rusher. He could have been an every down OLB in a 3-4... interesting move </articlebody>

Redskins add Kelly

<articlebody>Continuing theme here in round two, players who a month or two ago thought to be going in the first rounder slide... the Redskins stopped the slide for WR Malcolm Kelly at #51. He was initially thought to be the pick at #11 to the Bills... then that pick was suppose to be Devin Thomas... in the end they BOTH land in Washington for the Redskins, who also got Fred Davis have made a major move to improve their offense and make Jason Campbell very very happy. Kelly was hurt by slow 40 times and his mouth, but at this point he is a great pick </articlebody>

Packers do it again

<articlebody>The Packers do it again... last year no one thought they would take a defensive tackle... this year... well they don't need a receiver... so they take one, Jordy Nelson who is a good looking receiver who wasn't talked about as much as a number of others. How about Nelson and Avery being two of the top three receivers. He is a former QB who is much faster than he timed at the combine. I think Favre just cringed </articlebody>

Redskins get receiver

<articlebody>Here comes the run on receivers with the second in a row. The Redskins have selected WR Devin Thomas who was a fast rising player but while many had him going #11 overall he lasted into round two where he belongs so we'll be nicer here than we would have at #11. Thomas is explosive but a one year guy and a junior... two things that don't always work in the NFL </articlebody>

Rams give us a wow

<articlebody>The Rams give us a wow! We knew the wide receivers were coming but who... I mean really could anyone have predicted the first receiver to be selected would be Donnie Avery? He was someone we mentioned yesterday to keep an eye on but would have never guessed it to go this way... the most talented receiver in the draft? Certainly not but a small fast receiver who is a return guy as well </articlebody>

Dolphins take Merling

<articlebody>The Dolphins got real good value with DE Phillip Merling who could and probably should have gone in round one. A good start to round two </articlebody>

Giants select Kenny Phillips

<articlebody>With the final pick in the first round the New York Giants selected safety Kenny Phillips, getting a decent value and a pick at a position of need and considering the history of Miami Hurricane safeties it might be better than you think </articlebody>

Jets move up

<articlebody>The Jets moved back into round one giving up their 2nd and 4th round pick to the Packers to select TE Dustin Keller. He is a strong receiving tight end / H-back. He will help and is an important key no matter who is the quarterback, the tight end is a key. He is a great addition but they need players and didn't want to give up picks... in the end we like it tho, he should really help the offense </articlebody>

49ers take Kentwan Balmer

<articlebody>The 49ers selected DT Kentwan Balmer with the #29 pick in round one. They wanted to improve the offensive line. He will play end in their 3-4 defense. That means Isaac Sopoaga will likely move to the nose tackle spot. Not a great pick but solid. They need to rush the passer and that comes from the linebackers in a 3-4, that may be next as they are up early in round two </articlebody>

Seahawks select Lawrence Jackson

<articlebody>The Seahawks went defense but surprised a bit taking USC DE Lawrence Jackson. He is a solid three down end, not a speed rush guy but a a solid every down lineman </articlebody>

Chargers select Antoine Cason

<articlebody>The Chargers went to the corner in round one taking cornerback Antoine Cason to help shore up their secondary. The Chargers could have gone a lot of ways and took a solid player in a position of need </articlebody>

Texans take Duane Brown

<articlebody>The Texans needed a tackle and reached a bit for Duane Brown. They missed out on some players moving back they got extra picks and Brown has potential but not likely a premier tackle for the first round but there was growing talk about him lately and 49ers were reportedly looking at him </articlebody>

Cowboys move up

<articlebody>The Dallas Cowboys traded up after all but not so high... they went from #28 to #25. They used the pick to take CB Mike Jenkins... didn't we mention him a few minutes ago? Good to trade up for him as the Texans were next and likely would have taken them.. then the Chargers who may have as well. Now the Seahawks fall back a few spots and can still get Keller </articlebody>

Titans select Chris Johnson

<articlebody>Holy crap... the Titans have trumped the Falcons and by a long shot.... they have taken RB Chris Johnson at #24 in round one. He is so fast he looks like lightning but way way to high here! Horrible but another team looking to create running back duo's and it is a speed playmaker for Vince, but if they can't throw the ball defenses will put 8-9 men in the box and the speed won't help when he is getting hit in the backfield </articlebody>

Steelers select Rashard Mendenhall

<articlebody>The Steelers wanted an offensive lineman but they are all gone... Rashard Mendenhall was sliding and the Steelers stepped in and stopped that. The Steelers like to run the ball and now he and Willie Parker will be another impressive duo </articlebody>

Cowboys select Felix Jones

<articlebody>Well the just about every mock draft including ours had RB Felix Jones going #22 to the Cowboys and Jerry Jones went with it. He is an explosive back who has never carried the load. Neither has Marion Barber, but the two together is frightening </articlebody>

Falcons come up

<articlebody>The Falcons were thought to be a team coming up to get a quarterback if they didn't take Matt Ryan... but they got Ryan and the Falcons decided to come back into round one as well... with the Redskins pick at #21 offensive tackle Sam Baker. What a BAD move. He is a good tackle but it is a position with depth in the draft and they had the picks in round two to get one. Baker is not a value here. Definitely not worth moving up for him </articlebody>

Bucs take Aqib Talib

<articlebody>The Bucs have taken a chance... CB Aqib Talib at #20. He has the ability but he has some major character and marijuana concerns. He has the size and ball skills to excel with the Cover 2 defense. Dangerous pick </articlebody>

Panthers move way up

<articlebody>The Panthers have moved up into the first round again... trading with the Eagles to select tackle Jeff Otah. Well another pick we call at the right spot, had him in the mock draft here to the Eagles which made a lot of sense, but the Panthers moved up here to get him. The Eagles are not out of the first round and could have used Otah with the age they have at tackle, not sure I understand this. What did the Panthers have to give up? It will be expensive. The Panthers come out with a new back and someone to block for him </articlebody>

Ravens keep moving

<articlebody>The Ravens keep moving, after missing out on Matt Ryan at #8 they traded back to #26... now they came back up to #18 to select Delaware QB Joe Flacco. Which other team moves up into round one for Brohm or Henne? The Ravens got their #2 QB on their board. Flacco looks the part and they have to be happy. The Texans move down to #26, most had them looking corner and Mike Jenkins may still be there... not likely but possible </articlebody>

Lions surprise at 17

<articlebody>The Lions have selected reached a little to get right tackle Gosder Cherilus at #17. This is bad, if they wanted to go offensive line theyt should have stayed at #15 and taken Albert themselves! Mendenhall is slipping a bit now, The Texans are possible, what about the Cowboys at #22. We actually like Cherilus a lot but this is early and with Albert there two picks ago it doesn't fit. Cherilus will be a good right tackle but doesn't look like a top left tackle </articlebody>

Cardinals select Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

<articlebody>The Arizona Cardinals have selected cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at #16. He has good height, is a bit slight but is very athletic and looked good in the Senior Bowl. This moves Rolle to safety, which was done before but secures it. He is a very good looking player with ball skills that needs to improve his tackling and be more physical </articlebody>

Chiefs get Branden Albert

<articlebody>The Chiefs have moved up from #17 to the Lions #15 to get guard / tackle Branden Albert who many had them taking at #5. I'll say it right now, they have won the draft with Albert and Glenn Dorsey. They certainly have the picks to move around and likely are not done making trades yet. This won't cost much and was smart as someone else could have come up for Albert who shouldn't have lasted this long. A good move for the Lions to gain a pick and only move back two spots </articlebody>

Bears take Chris Williams

<articlebody>The Bears needed help at tackle and they got that help with Chris Williams, a very good pick for them. Branden Albert was possible as well but played guard, Williams may be safer as he has the experience at left tackle. John Tait can move to the right side. Good move. Running back was discussed but without a line to block Mendenhall wouldn't have gone far </articlebody>

Jonathan Stewart goes to Carolina

<articlebody>The Panthers wanted a big running back and got one in Jonathan Stewart. Derrick Harvey was a hope but he went earlier. Not a pick we like so much here </articlebody>

Broncos dancing

<articlebody>The Denver Broncos are dancing and all smiles as offensive tackle Ryan Clady slid a bit and was there for them at #12. It made for an easy and quick pick. A great looking tackle that should be there 10+ years </articlebody>

Bills take Leodis McKelvin

<articlebody>The Bills have selected CB Leodis McKelvin at #11... a great pick for them after losing Nate Clements last year. McKelvin is a great cover corner and yes he may not get a lot of interceptions, but receivers going against him won't catch much either. There had been lots of talk of a receiver here and that would have been horrible. They can address that later </articlebody>

Patriots surprise

<articlebody>The Patriots Patriots surprised some people who expected a corner... lineman was discussed incorrectly as well, they selected LB Jerod Mayo at #10. It is a good pick, he is versatile and they have major, major needs at inside linebacker. Corner is a need but remember they have done well with low round corners, Randall Gay started in a Super Bowl as a rookie and he was undrafted. Mayo could be the heir apparent to Bruschi as he is smart and quick. A surprise, but a very good pick </articlebody>

Jags pay the piper

<articlebody>The Jaguars paid the piper to move up, giving the Ravens their first round pick, #26 overall, 2 third round picks, #71 and #89 overall and their 4th round pick. The Ravens should be looking quarterback at #26 and could have their choice of the 2nd tier QBs. Some of the teams in the top of round two were looking to move up and picks 27-29 were open to trade so the Ravens are above them </articlebody>

Rivers goes to Cincy

<articlebody>The Bengals may have missed on Harvey, but they moved quickly to take USC LB Keith Rivers who follows in a great line of Trojan linebackers... that takes a target from the Patriots who are up next and likely will go corner now </articlebody>

Saints give up 2 picks

<articlebody>The Patriots got the Saints #10 overall pick in round one as well as their 3rd round pick... the Saints got Ellis and the Patriots 5th round pick. Much less costly for the Saints than the rumors that were swirling of them getting up higher for Dorsey </articlebody>

Jaguars move way up

<articlebody>The Jaguars have moved way up to the Ravens #8 spot from #26... that will be a hefty price to pay... The Jaguars needed a top defensive end and they knew there would not be great value at #26 so they paid to come up and take Derrick Harvey, the next best end available. The Bengals could have been looking at him and he should upgrade the Jaguars line that is in a bit of transition </articlebody>

Saints move up for Ellis

<articlebody>The New Orleans Saints have traded up with the Patriots from #10 to #7 to select USC DT Sedrick Ellis. They have to be happy as they wanted to move up for a top defensive tackle and they got him at #7 where the cost is a little less. He will improve the interior of their line to go along with the talent they have on the outside and keep the opposing lineman off their new linebackers </articlebody>

Jets select Vernon Gholston

<articlebody>The New York Jets have selected Ohio State OLB Vernon Gholston with the #6 pick... and the green room is empty in New York, how about that. Gholston has the numbers as Mike Mamula did, now can he out produce him in the game. He is good and has the ability to star in the Jets 3-4 he could excel... now will he </articlebody>

Glenn Dorsey goes to Kansas City

<articlebody>Glenn Dorsey goes to Kansas City #5 overall... while I love the pick and he is a great value here, if the Chiefs were really offered the Saints #1 this year and their 2nd this year as well as their number 1 next year they should have taken the offer! They would miss out on the d'line in round one, but could have gotten a tackle and corner and would have added another #2 this year. Now look for a corner at #17. Dorsey will be a huge addition to the middle of the Chiefs defense and despite what we said this was a great pick </articlebody>

More speed in Oakland

<articlebody>The Raiders added more elite speed in RB Darren McFadden... he will take the lead role and Fargas will move to the compliment role. McFadden has some character issues but in Oakland he look like a Boy Scout. McFadden will energize the off season and JaMarcus Russell is certainly smiling. I think Jerry Jones just shed a tear </articlebody>

Falcons take Matt Ryan

<articlebody>As if it wasn't obvious the Michael Vick Falcons are over... the Falcons have the new face of the team in BC quarterback Matt Ryan. Passing up Glenn Dorsey to get the face of the organization be a better move considering their need to move forward but Dorsey would be a better fit and with all their 2nd round picks they could have gotten any of the other QBs they wanted </articlebody>

Rams go Long

<articlebody>The Rams went long... DE Chris Long son of Howie. His heart and desire are needed in St. Louis and will be a great and the right addition to the Rams d'line. Adam Carriker inside and Leonard Little on the other end should definitely improve their chance this year. Glenn Dorsey was reportedly their top rated player but Long was close and a better fit </articlebody>

Jeremy Shockey still a Giant for now

<articlebody>Giants TE Jeremy Shockey still is a member of the New York team but don't expect him to be one after this weekend. He has worn out his welcome and the Saints are very interested... the question is the price. Reports have the Saints sending a second round pick for him, but this may not be announced until they are on the clock, or the Saints may try and lower the price. A hunch... look for a deal overnight between round two and three for a third round pick tomorrow and another pick next year </articlebody>

Michael Roos gets paid

<articlebody>The Titans are not only focused on the draft, today they signed left tackle Michael Roos to a 6 year $43 million extension according to ESPN. It includes $15 million guaranteed and $25 million in the first 3 years, not bad for a 3 year player taken in the second round </articlebody>

Cowboys trade not done but another is

<articlebody>The Cowboys trade for Pacman Jones isn't complete yet, but they have completed a different one. They have sent ILB Akin Ayodele and TE Anthony Fasano to the Miami Dolphins and Bill Parcells for a 4th round pick. Ayodele was going to lose his starting job to Zach Thomas and Fasano is playing behind Jason Witten, but was a 2nd round pick just two years ago. Seems like a lot to send for a 4th round pick even if it's the first pick in the round. The Dolphins get a good backup at tight end and a linebacker who can step in and start... certainly more than they could have gotten with the 4th round pick so for now they appear to be the winners </articlebody>

<articlebody>Ok here is our final 2008 NFL Mock Draft. Glad we got the first pick right and guaranteed not to get all 32 thanks to the Patriots, but never came close anyway </articlebody>

Dewayne Robertson heads to Denver

<articlebody>The Jets have traded DT Dewayne Robertson to the Denver Broncos for a conditional pick in next year's draft. The Jets have been looking to unload him for a while and better hope he meets the criteria to make the pick more valuable after the previous deal they had with the Bengals fell through </articlebody>

49ers lose Baas

<articlebody>The 49ers have lost starting right guard David Baas until the regular season with a torn pec muscle. The team says he will miss part of camp but be ready for the season. Maybe but with no play in the preseason likely they now more than before need to get a pair of good young lineman early this weekend </articlebody>

Pacman finally heads to Big D

<articlebody>So Adam "Pacman" Jones is finally heading to the Cowboys. Dallas and the Tennessee Titans have reached an agreement according to ESPN... the Cowboys will send their 4th round pick, #126 overall, to the Titans. For protection the Cowboys added a clause that they get the Titans 4th round pick next year if Jones isn't reinstated by the league. It works out well for the Titans just to get something and get rid of Pacman. The Cowboys take a huge character chance, but what's new. If reinstated and he can quickly get back to form he would be a steal for a 4th round pick. A good corner and great return man he could add some electricity to the Cowboys. Of course he could certainly add some negative electricity as well and of course controversies as if they needed more. As for now it's a push and we'll have to wait and see what happens. A big question is how far if any this pushes down a corner on the Cowboys draft board </articlebody>

Anquan Boldin not happy

<articlebody>Add Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin to the list of players who want a trade and add the Cardinals to the list saying shut up and play. It's getting tiring listening to these players and their agents. You want more money fine... go ask your boss nicely and if he says no don't go whining to the media about it </articlebody>

Vikings trying to buy wins

<articlebody>The Vikings are aggressively trying to improve this off season. At least that is how you have to presume all the money they are spending. Add their newest addition... former Chiefs DE Jared Allen who they have acquired for a 1st round and two 3rd round picks this year. The teams also swapped 6th round picks so the Vikings move up there. As if that wasn't a big enough price to pay the Vikings then signed Allen to a 6 year $74 million monster deal with $31 million guaranteed. Holy #@!% !!! That is a ton of money for a player one strike away from a year long suspension... ok that is a lot of money for any player, over a $12 million average! Will have to wait until all the numbers are released to see how much funny money is in there, but $31 million guaranteed represents over $5 million a year. The deal makes him one of the highest paid players in the league and the Vikings hope playing on the turf makes him even faster improving on his excellent sack numbers which led the league last year with 15.5. The Chiefs now are loaded for the draft. It gives them 13 overall picks and 6 in the first 82 meaning they can move up if they want as 13 is a lot of draft picks to bring to camp, but get younger they will. With the two first rounders they should get a player to take Allen's place and help on the offensive line </articlebody>

Saints trying to climb up

<articlebody>The New Orleans Saints are looking to move up in the first round... all the way to #2 and the thinking is they are after local product DT Glenn Dorsey. Forget the cost of moving up, forget the cost of paying the pick... they Saints have admitted they are looking to move up. It's an interesting move to go up and get one of the premier players. Maybe not the smartest move but they are being bold. A few months ago Dorsey was considered by most to be the best player in the draft. Some injury issues and the usual draft process pushed him down a bit but he is still a force inside. The Rams and Falcons have been contacted as have other teams, but if it's Dorsey they want, it's likely those two teams they will have to deal with. If they can't get there the questions is will they move up for Sedrick Ellis as well </articlebody>

Seahawks release Shaun Alexander

<articlebody>As expected the Seattle Seahawks have released RB Shaun Alexander saying it was a difficult decision. We really doubt it was that hard to make after the way he has played since their Super Bowl appearance and his big new contract... that is what made it painful. They knew he was getting up there in years and was coming off a huge year and paid him for it, and paid they did. Alexander will now look for another team, have to wait and see how he feels about a veterans minimum contract with incentives. Of course it will be sold as a bigger deal but he won't reach the incentives and will be a backup for a year or two before completely fading away </articlebody>

Bengals may be nuts

<articlebody>The Bengals may be nuts, is this news? According to ESPN the Bengals have turned down an offer from the Washington Redskins for WR Chad Johnson... a first round pick this year, #21 overall, and a conditional third round pick next year that could escalate to a first rounder! Also they have told the Eagles and Cowboys they are not interested in trading the malcontent childish receiver. Hey were all for demanding players knock off the cry baby crap, threatening to hold out for the year etc. It's not like Johnson is not being paid well, he is. He can rot while others play the game for all we care, same should have been done with T.O. when he was whining to get out of the deal that had him go to the Ravens to end up in Philly, how well did that work out? Johnson is making enemies and we like the Bengals stand but it must hurt to pass up an offer like that </articlebody>

One happy now another mad

<articlebody>What is it with the Chicago Bears linebackers? First Lance Briggs held out last year and said he would never play for the Bears again... how did that work out? He came back for his franchise tender and then signed a long term deal this year and is happy now... so now it's Brian Urlacher's turn to cause trouble. According to a report in the Sun-Times Urlacher requested a trade and another source told them he threatened to retire... he has since said he never threatened to retire but wants his contract redone as he has outperformed it. He is under contract through 2011 and is playing on a 9 year $56 million deal, but says the market has changed and he deserves a raise. The team has offered a one year extension, but that wasn't good for Urlacher. A big issue is the neck surgery he had earlier this year and the back problems he has had. The question is how many more years does he have in him? He has played in all 16 games every year but one (2004), but will turn 30 before the season. They need to keep him happy but not put themselves at too much risk. With Urlacher not attending voluntary training and possibly training camp if a deal isn't reached it's another year of fun in the Windy City </articlebody>

Chiefs willing to deal Jared Allen

<articlebody>With the draft approaching the Chiefs have decided to shop franchise DE Jared Allen, and there is interest. The Vikings and Bucs are the most interested but the Jaguars could be as well. It's not known what the Chiefs will demand in return, but it will include a first rounder this year and likely a third as well, or better next year. Allen had 15.5 sacks last year and is one of the top ends in the league, but also one strike away from a one year suspension so there is risk in trading away a couple of high picks and of course the huge long term deal he wants for someone that close to being gone. Not that that will stop someone from trading for him. The move would give the Chiefs more options as they could take Vernon Gholston to replace him at #5 and get a tackle with the first round pick they get in return, or get a lineman at #5 - Jake Long if a miracle happened or more likely Branden Albert or Ryan Clady and then target one of the ends or corners later in the first. The extra picks would certainly give them more options for rebuilding the team </articlebody>

Drafting wide receivers

<articlebody>The NFL draft is a crapshoot and the 2008 version appears to be a little more than usual. No true #1 pick, some safer picks, some with more upside.... then there is the one constant, the danger of drafting a wide receiver in round one. Rookie receivers usually do not make a big impact, junior wide receivers may be flashy choices but are even more dangerous. This year the name moving up the charts is Devin Thomas... who? He is from Michigan State and a one year wonder. Let's see a junior with only one year of production, runs fast and has good size.. shoot him up the board.... danger!

What about a couple receivers who were consider near the top - Mario Manningham and Malcolm Kelly - both juniors and both falling down the boards. Neither ran a quality 40 time, but they have excuses. Those are part of the problem. Manningham lied about failing drug tests in college, then admitted to it and then sounded like an idiot on a national radio show. He clearly doesn't get it, but it appears NFL GM's do and there is little chance he goes in round one now. Kelly didn't run well and blamed his school for changing the surface he was to run on.... you see he had special shoes and everything. Ok this shoe thing is true of everyone now a days (ugh) but to come out and bash the school was an immature and dumb move on his part.

Why do people get so caught up on a 40 time of someone on a track with special shoes when they have been preparing to run this drill for months. Are they ever asked to run the 40 without pads and in tracks shoes during a game? Jerry Rice ran a 4.55 40 coming out of college but didn't look that slow when the speedy Redskins corner Darrell Green was chasing him... who really cares. I understand it has some value but it is far too overrated. How many times do receivers run in the 4.3s and then you hear people say that team needs receivers you can stretch the field and their current group isn't getting it done. The 40 speed doesn't make them a deep threat. Even better there have been top track guys playing receiver in the NFL and referred to as more of a possession guy... not saying the assessment was wrong but pointing out they were track stars just a couple years ago... NFL speed is different than track speed. Being fast at one doesn't make you fast at the other, get it? There are plenty of teams needing a receiver and some will reach for one, more will regret than will rejoice and fans will be excited in April and forget their names in October... such is life in the NFL in April </articlebody>

They have signed former Chiefs WR Samie Parker and former Seahawk and 49ers WR Darrell Jackson to a one year deals and released WR Derrick Hamilton and tight end Chad Upshaw. They also sign a camp leg in punter Danny Baugher. Jackson's addition could be big if he can regain old form. He spent a miserable year in San Francisco last year where he just didn't seem to fit, get open, or care that much. His production did go up at the end of the year as the team played more of a West Coast type of offense so there is hope he will come back to life in Denver </articlebody>

Forget the assumptions

<articlebody>So the Dolphins need a QB, Matt Ryan will be selected first in the draft. Wait Chris Long is just Parcell's type of guy... Chris Long will be selected first... now word the Dolphins are negotiating with Michigan tackle Jake Long, who now clearly appears to be the front runner. Long is a very good looking tackle, probably a step below Joe Thomas who went third last year. The draft this year is similar to 2005 where there was no clear #1 choice, no QB worth all the money (is anyone) and no other player who deserved to knock Alex Smith out. The Dolphins are without a doubt looking for someone to sign for less than the usually raise over last year's #1. Quarterbacks have owned the top spot and are usually paid a premium, the Dolphins are looking to remove that premium and may open negotiations with others and see if anyone is willing to sign their name before the draft for a lesser price. We agree with Bill Polian who said things have gotten out of hand with the top picks contracts. The top 5 or 10 immediately become among the highest paid at their position and history shows many will never make it. The agents won't let them sign for less because it makes them look bad, or so they think. The Dolphins will need to find someone and a price they can live with before the draft to avoid a long holdout. Hey Jake you ready to sign </articlebody>

Of course no one really wants those pictures out there, but really what is the problem? He is a 24 year old single male who has a ton of money and a glamorous job... did you expect him to be home watching CSPAN or enjoying the celebrity status? Didn't we all know this was who he was coming out of college? Ok the beer bong picture probably is regrettable.. your not in college anymore, stick to the hot tub. But seriously folks relax, it's not like you wouldn't be there if you could.
All safe in New York

<articlebody>The jobs are safe in New York it appears this year in the NFL. After nearly being fired, Tom Coughlin is safe (obviously) and now according to the New York Daily News so is the Jets coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Their owner Woody Johnson isn't looking for a one year turn around. That is good I guess but after spending all that money they better improve! Still it's wise to keep them off the hot seat. One of the worst things would be to spend all that money and then fire the coach the next year only to find the new coach they wanted say the players don't fit his scheme. Notice how long some teams take to transition to a 3-4 when a new coach takes over that wants to go that way. It is easier to switch to the 4-3, but Calvin Pace has shown he didn't fit as well there. If Johnson wants what the Patriots have it is wise to give it some time. The Jets played well over their heads in that first year with Mangini, last year was bad... let's see what this year brings without all the pressure being on his shoulders to keep his job out of the gate... then again it worked well in New York last year didn't it </articlebody>

<articlebody>The 49ers got more than a slap on the wrist for the tampering charge put forth by the Bears over Lance Briggs. Supposedly the 49ers were interested in trading for Briggs last year and contacted his agent to discuss a contract extension. However the Bears didn't give them permission to do that and filed charges against the 49ers. This off season when he became a free agent the 49ers showed no interest and neither did anyone else before he resigned with the Bears for $6 million per. The punishment handed down cost the 49ers a 5th round pick and the Bears and 49ers swap spots in the 3rd round (7th and 12th picks). The Bears were not harmed in anyway and got their man back which they didn't think they would, yet they "get" something out of this... not sure we understand that. <articlebody>The Vikings have signed former Seahawk and Texans safety Michael Boulware. In their Tampa 2 defense he will be playing closer to the line and providing run support, if he were to win the starting job (that may not be a good sign).
Raiders are at it again

<articlebody>The Raiders are at it again spending big bucks. According to ESPN Falcons CB DeAngelo Hall has agreed to a contract with Oakland that will complete the trade for a second round pick, and possibly another later round pick. The deal is reported to be worth $70 million over 7 years. You have to consider this a high risk high reward. He is a good corner, but doesn't know how to shut his mouth and if things don't go well in Oakland he could get unhappy and loud quickly... remember Moss, Porter, Sapp, Woodson... need we continue? This could seem to make it near impossible to complete a long term deal with their other corner Nnamdi Asomugha, who is franchised... but this is Oakland who cares about money. Though you'd have to say Asomugha just found the contract terms he is looking for </articlebody>

DeAngelo Hall may be headed to Oakland

<articlebody>The Raiders don't appear to be done spending money. According to ESPN they have agreed to send a 2nd round. pick to the Falcons for Hall if they can work out a new contract. But the arrogant little jerk can't seem to keep his much shut telling the Atlanta Journal Constitution "no team is going to sign me without talking to me and getting everything right on my end". Yes you fool no team will trade for a player until discussing the contract parameters, but this loudmouth fool thinks people care what he thinks and if he knew much he would shut up and let the Raiders overpay for him as they have for others all off season. An interesting side note is if they give the overrated corner a deal like Asante Samuel's it will make the one year tender to Nnamdi Asomugha even more expensive as he is an exclusive franchise player meaning his tender is of the top 5 corners salaries THIS year... interesting move. There are rumblings they would take the tag off him if this deal goes through. What a colossal mistake that would be, much better off paying Asomugha and keep the 2nd round pick! Some have said Asomugha should sign quickly as the big money has dried up in free agency... dumb. The big money deals dried up because there is no one left worth anything close to one. However teams have a ton of cap room left and Asomugha would see a monster deal if he all of a sudden got free of the Raiders, and that alone would be worth millions to leave such a troubled franchise </articlebody>

Philly shopping for receiver

<articlebody>The rumors of star receivers coming to Philadelphia haven't come true and likely won't, but they may have just found a target for free. Darrell Jackson who was released by the 49ers would do well to get back into a West Coast offense and while not a #1 anymore, he has experience and may do better than the Eagles other options. Not to say he would succeed as the Seahawks let him go rather cheaply and to a division rival last year... seems they were right about him, but a change of scenery and return to an offense that suits him may help. Though if he drops balls again like last year (and more than a few in Seattle over the years) the Philly fans will turn quickly on him, it could be a low risk trial as he should be had rather inexpensively at least on a one year deal. The Titans may not be a natural fit but will likely be looking as well </articlebody>

Coming and going in SF

<articlebody>The 49ers fans knew this would be an important off season and head coach Mike Nolan's job was not guaranteed to him after the season... Scot McCloughan was promoted to GM and Nolan was stripped of his authority but kept the head coaching job. The news conference announcing it was odd as it seemed to be a major event to which Nolan said he didn't think anything would change... hmnn. At about that time the offensive coordinator job was open and McCloughan said Mike Martz was not a serious candidate, but guess what he got the job. Now in fairness Nolan still had authority to select his own staff, so that one can somewhat pass. However last week McCloughan said he saw newly acquired WR Isaac Bruce and Darrell Jackson as the team's starters at this point... now a week later the 49ers have released Jackson and the statement from the team only has Nolan's voice praising Jackson. To be clear Jackson was a huge disappointment last year and his making the team was far from sure, it leads to an interesting question about who is pulling the strings. Yes the team surprisingly added Bryant Johnson so someone was likely to go and Jackson may have been the right choice considering he is best as a West Coast offense receiver, but the words of last week make it a bit interesting. What else will be interesting to watch is the style Martz uses this year. He has said he will feature Frank Gore, but it has been a while since he has focused on the run. Also he has never had a great tight end, not that Vernon Davis deserves to be called great yet, but he is talented if not a great natural football receiver. The receivers are also the bigger type Nolan would prefer and McCloughan has even said Martz didn't want a certain type it is interesting that none on the roster fit the small quick type most associate with Martz. Of course in looking across the Bay the 49ers appear a perfect organization, but comparing anyone to the Raiders is hardly fair treatment </articlebody>

Bryant Johnson signs with the 49ers

<articlebody>The 49ers dipped back into free agency to sign former divisional opponent, Cardinals WR Bryant Johnson to a one year deal according to ESPN. Johnson has made some trips around the league but didn't generate the amount of interest most thought he would and he was unable to get the money he wanted. It appears he looked for the best opportunity for playing time and took a one year deal to re-enter free agency next year hoping for a better outcome. In San Francisco he finds his position coach from his rookie year in Jerry Sullivan, who Anquan Boldin credits for his huge rookie year. Add to that Mike Martz is running (throwing) the offense and you know there will be opportunities for the receivers. Johnson becomes another one of the receivers who look like #3 options on most team that will compete for one of the two starting jobs in San Francisco. The 49ers other receivers are Isaac Bruce, Darrell Jackson, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Ashley Lelie. This should take receiver off the top of their list in the draft though a shifty slot receiver in the 3rd or 4th rounds is still a possibility </articlebody>

The 49ers snookered a couple of draft picks out of the Redskins for Lloyd, but the Redskins compounded the error by giving him a big new contract... after that blew up in their face they released him this year. Lloyd has always been a little too infatuated with himself is hoping a return to Illinois (he went to the University of Illinois when current Bears coordinator Ron Turner was the head coach there) will help him do the same.
Sad day in Green Bay

<articlebody>Well it didn't take Brett Favre long to break down in the expected retirement tear fest. Favre said he can play but doesn't want to. He tried to make clear it was not about what the Packers did or didn't do in free agency and that he was just tired. The enjoyment was there for three hours on Sunday but the work all week and in the off season was getting to be too much. Here is a thought on all the Randy Moss stuff... Favre waited until the big names in free agency signed yes, but was he hoping the team would make some big moves? Maybe it was cautionary so he didn't announce his retirement and then see the team make the moves and wish he was back. Favre has always been honest, even maybe when he shouldn't have been, so we'll take him at his word. However if the team signed a guard or maybe a safety that would improve the team we're not sure that would have brought him back, but Favre is like a little kid on the football field and if they gave him a new toy to play with like Randy Moss it likely would have gotten him excited enough to come out and play one more year. He didn't go out like Elway, but he went out on his own and after a good year, his best in recent memory. What will he do now... nothing, he says. That seems fitting, relax and ride the tractor as has always been joked about </articlebody>

Rogers has struggled with his weight, consistency on the field and desire in the past and the Browns better hope he doesn't become too satisfied with his new contract and take it easy.
Walker lands in Oakland

<articlebody>According to ESPN former Broncos WR Javon Walker has agreed to a 6 year $55 million (insane) contract with $16 million guaranteed and $27 due in the first 3 years. In case those numbers sound familiar, Randy Moss just signed a 3 year $27 million deal with $15 million guaranteed. Walker is coming off a year where injuries held him to 26 catches for 287 yards. Just a bad year you say? That may be as he had over 1,000 yards in 2006 with 69 catches but the previous year injury cost him the year and he finished with just 4 catches. Walker's knees are a concern and while he was once viewed as a blazing #1 receiver, that isn't the case right now and he is in no way worth this kind of money, which further goes to show the Raiders have definitely lost their minds and Raiders fans should be more nervous than ever as to what the future holds </articlebody>

Turner is a good addition

<articlebody>Some don't like the Falcons giving big money to Michael Turner, but this looks good to us. Yes it was a lot of money, just under $6 million a year and $15 million guaranteed. Look at it this way, that is less than what it would cost to get a back in the first round (Darren McFadden) and Turner has proven himself. As for the fact he has mileage... in his 4 year career he has only 228 carries which is less than a lead back has in a season. He has a gaudy 5.5 yard per average carry and has been a home run hitter with 3 TDs over 70 yards, and he isn't considered a speed back. He will replace Warrick Dunn (who will be released) and is a good pair with Jerious Norwood. This pair is better than Norwood and McFadden as well and allows the Falcons to focus elsewhere in the draft if McFadden is still on the board... which is good as they have a lot of needs! Mark it down, this will be a good decision looking back on it </articlebody>

Prices going up

<articlebody>Yes we know the salary cap has risen and the newest free agents are getting paid huge. A couple that stand out to us are Bernard Berrian and Alan Faneca, but for different reason. Berrian is not a top 5 certainly or even top 10 player at his position, he had one good year and average one the year before. Yes he is an up and coming receiver with great deep speed, but $42 million for 6 years and $16 million guaranteed? Sure the top player at the position gets paid more than he should in free agency, but Berrian wasn't the top player... what about Randy Moss. No one really counted him as they thought he was going back to the Patriots. Now how can Moss accept anything less than this... he certainly deserves to be paid much more than Berrian but the Patriots won't be paying that much. The Vikings really raised the bar on receivers here. On the other side Faneca raises the bar for offensive lineman but he certainly is in the top 3 at his position in the league and deserved to be paid more than all the guys last year, especially ones who haven't even earned a free trip to Hawaii. Faneca got more, but too much more... hint to Moss. Parity exists off the field as well. By the same token these players should be getting more than all the draft picks coming into the league. After all remember the #1 pick in the draft this year will be pushing for $35 million guaranteed. Taking that into consideration what is Moss, Faneca or even Berrian worth in comparison? It is easy to see there are some real issues that need to be fixed, but don't hold your breath. Moss... he figures to see $20-$22 million guaranteed tops, but the real questions is who will pay it... New England, Green Bay... probably not, Dallas don't count on it... after the year he had who thought he would have this much trouble finding a contract </articlebody>

The move brings them an upgrade but Berrian must to a better job catching the ball than he did last year. No word on the dollar amount yet, but it will be a lot, and too much </articlebody>

<articlebody>The 49ers have signed former Rams WR Isaac Bruce to a 2 year $6 million deal. The move reunites Bruce with Mike Martz who is the 49ers offensive coordinator now. Bruce had his best years under Martz in St. Louis, and even in his later years (35 years old) he should step in and start for the 49ers (what competition does he really have?). Knowing Martz offense is a big step up and he will be good for the younger receivers as well... not to mention get to see the Rams twice a year. One minor detail to work out, Bruce has worn #80 with the Rams, rumor has that number isn't available in San Francisco </articlebody>

Raiders have lost it

<articlebody>The Raiders were dysfunctional before, now we will just call them nuts. First they gave Tommy Kelly over $50 million (was there any competition?). Now they have signed former Giants safety Gibril Wilson to a 6 year $39 million deal with $16 million guaranteed, making him the third highest paid safety in the league! Don't get us wrong Wilson is a good safety and will fit well with the Raiders but this is way too much. Maybe it's just that they have to over pay to get people to come here knowing the head coach even now isn't off the chopping block for the upcoming year. The last time the Raiders got infatuated by a free agent coming off a Super Bowl (Cowboys Larry Brown) how did that work out when they overpaid for him? Granted he was the Super Bowl MVP </articlebody>

Funny the Saints are in it, didn't they have the same thing happen last year with Jason David.
