So much for John Beck who was taken in round two last year. This is the problem with the quick hook on coaches as everyone wants their guys and run different offenses and defenses and ends up wasting top picks and player from the previous regimes http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Green Bay Packers are no longer Brett Favre's team... in round two they added a backup or challenger to Aaron Rodgers... Louisville's Brian Brohm who could have been a top 10 pick i not for a down senior year. He didn't get a lot of help and the whole team struggled. Brohm is a good fit in the West Coast offense, but Rodgers can't be happy.. as if it isn't enough to replace Brett Favre... now he has a high second round pick sitting behind him. The Packers needed a backup as they have nothing behind Rodgers and he has shown himself to be injury prone... a bit different than Favre. Every time Rodgers has gotten into a game he has been hurt either in the game or last year in practice the week after... The Packers got a good pick, a great value but oh boy just like Philly last year http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Jaguars added Derrick Harvey in round one to help their pass rush but it appears they wanted more... they traded up with the Bucs in round two to get Quentin Groves, who is an undersized end and will be a situational rusher. He could have been an every down OLB in a 3-4... interesting move http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net Continuing theme here in round two, players who a month or two ago thought to be going in the first rounder slide... the Redskins stopped the slide for WR Malcolm Kelly at #51. He was initially thought to be the pick at #11 to the Bills... then that pick was suppose to be Devin Thomas... in the end they BOTH land in Washington for the Redskins, who also got Fred Davis have made a major move to improve their offense and make Jason Campbell very very happy. Kelly was hurt by slow 40 times and his mouth, but at this point he is a great pick http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Packers do it again... last year no one thought they would take a defensive tackle... this year... well they don't need a receiver... so they take one, Jordy Nelson who is a good looking receiver who wasn't talked about as much as a number of others. How about Nelson and Avery being two of the top three receivers. He is a former QB who is much faster than he timed at the combine. The Redskins have selected WR Devin Thomas who was a fast rising player but while many had him going #11 overall he lasted into round two where he belongs so we'll be nicer here than we would have at #11. We knew the wide receivers were coming but who... I mean really could anyone have predicted the first receiver to be selected would be Donnie Avery? He is a strong receiving tight end / H-back. He will help and is an important key no matter who is the quarterback, the tight end is a key. They wanted to improve the offensive line. He will play end in their 3-4 defense. That means Isaac Sopoaga will likely move to the nose tackle spot. Not a great pick but solid. They missed out on some players moving back they got extra picks and Brown has potential but not likely a premier tackle for the first round but there was growing talk about him lately and 49ers were reportedly looking at him http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Dallas Cowboys traded up after all but not so high... they went from #28 to #25. They used the pick to take CB Mike Jenkins... didn't we mention him a few minutes ago? Good to trade up for him as the Texans were next and likely would have taken them.. then the Chargers who may have as well. He is so fast he looks like lightning but way way to high here! Rashard Mendenhall was sliding and the Steelers stepped in and stopped that. He is an explosive back who has never carried the load. What a BAD move. He is a good tackle but it is a position with depth in the draft and they had the picks in round two to get one. Baker is not a value here. He has the ability but he has some major character and marijuana concerns. He has the size and ball skills to excel with the Cover 2 defense. Well another pick we call at the right spot, had him in the mock draft here to the Eagles which made a lot of sense, but the Panthers moved up here to get him. The Eagles are not out of the first round and could have used Otah with the age they have at tackle, not sure I understand this. What did the Panthers have to give up? It will be expensive. The Panthers come out with a new back and someone to block for him http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Ravens keep moving, after missing out on Matt Ryan at #8 they traded back to #26... now they came back up to #18 to select Delaware QB Joe Flacco. Which other team moves up into round one for Brohm or Henne? The Ravens got their #2 QB on their board. Flacco looks the part and they have to be happy. The Texans move down to #26, most had them looking corner and Mike Jenkins may still be there... not likely but possible http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Lions have selected reached a little to get right tackle Gosder Cherilus at #17. This is bad, if they wanted to go offensive line theyt should have stayed at #15 and taken Albert themselves! Mendenhall is slipping a bit now, The Texans are possible, what about the Cowboys at #22. We actually like Cherilus a lot but this is early and with Albert there two picks ago it doesn't fit. Cherilus will be a good right tackle but doesn't look like a top left tackle http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Arizona Cardinals have selected cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at #16. He has good height, is a bit slight but is very athletic and looked good in the Senior Bowl. This moves Rolle to safety, which was done before but secures it. He is a very good looking player with ball skills that needs to improve his tackling and be more physical http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Chiefs have moved up from #17 to the Lions #15 to get guard / tackle Branden Albert who many had them taking at #5. I'll say it right now, they have won the draft with Albert and Glenn Dorsey. They certainly have the picks to move around and likely are not done making trades yet. This won't cost much and was smart as someone else could have come up for Albert who shouldn't have lasted this long. A good move for the Lions to gain a pick and only move back two spots http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Bears needed help at tackle and they got that help with Chris Williams, a very good pick for them. Branden Albert was possible as well but played guard, Williams may be safer as he has the experience at left tackle. John Tait can move to the right side. Good move. Derrick Harvey was a hope but he went earlier. It made for an easy and quick pick. McKelvin is a great cover corner and yes he may not get a lot of interceptions, but receivers going against him won't catch much either. There had been lots of talk of a receiver here and that would have been horrible. They can address that later http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Patriots Patriots surprised some people who expected a corner... lineman was discussed incorrectly as well, they selected LB Jerod Mayo at #10. It is a good pick, he is versatile and they have major, major needs at inside linebacker. Corner is a need but remember they have done well with low round corners, Randall Gay started in a Super Bowl as a rookie and he was undrafted. Mayo could be the heir apparent to Bruschi as he is smart and quick. A surprise, but a very good pick http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Jaguars paid the piper to move up, giving the Ravens their first round pick, #26 overall, 2 third round picks, #71 and #89 overall and their 4th round pick. The Ravens should be looking quarterback at #26 and could have their choice of the 2nd tier QBs. Some of the teams in the top of round two were looking to move up and picks 27-29 were open to trade so the Ravens are above them http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Bengals may have missed on Harvey, but they moved quickly to take USC LB Keith Rivers who follows in a great line of Trojan linebackers... that takes a target from the Patriots who are up next and likely will go corner now http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Patriots got the Saints #10 overall pick in round one as well as their 3rd round pick... the Saints got Ellis and the Patriots 5th round pick. Much less costly for the Saints than the rumors that were swirling of them getting up higher for Dorsey http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Jaguars have moved way up to the Ravens #8 spot from #26... that will be a hefty price to pay... The Jaguars needed a top defensive end and they knew there would not be great value at #26 so they paid to come up and take Derrick Harvey, the next best end available. The Bengals could have been looking at him and he should upgrade the Jaguars line that is in a bit of transition http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The New Orleans Saints have traded up with the Patriots from #10 to #7 to select USC DT Sedrick Ellis. They have to be happy as they wanted to move up for a top defensive tackle and they got him at #7 where the cost is a little less. He will improve the interior of their line to go along with the talent they have on the outside and keep the opposing lineman off their new linebackers http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The New York Jets have selected Ohio State OLB Vernon Gholston with the #6 pick... and the green room is empty in New York, how about that. Gholston has the numbers as Mike Mamula did, now can he out produce him in the game. He is good and has the ability to star in the Jets 3-4 he could excel... now will he http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net Glenn Dorsey goes to Kansas City #5 overall... while I love the pick and he is a great value here, if the Chiefs were really offered the Saints #1 this year and their 2nd this year as well as their number 1 next year they should have taken the offer! They would miss out on the d'line in round one, but could have gotten a tackle and corner and would have added another #2 this year. Now look for a corner at #17. Dorsey will be a huge addition to the middle of the Chiefs defense and despite what we said this was a great pick http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Raiders added more elite speed in RB Darren McFadden... he will take the lead role and Fargas will move to the compliment role. McFadden has some character issues but in Oakland he look like a Boy Scout. McFadden will energize the off season and JaMarcus Russell is certainly smiling. DE Chris Long son of Howie. His heart and desire are needed in St. Louis and will be a great and the right addition to the Rams d'line. Adam Carriker inside and Leonard Little on the other end should definitely improve their chance this year. He has worn out his welcome and the Saints are very interested... the question is the price. They have sent ILB Akin Ayodele and TE Anthony Fasano to the Miami Dolphins and Bill Parcells for a 4th round pick. Ayodele was going to lose his starting job to Zach Thomas and Fasano is playing behind Jason Witten, but was a 2nd round pick just two years ago. Seems like a lot to send for a 4th round pick even if it's the first pick in the round. The team says he will miss part of camp but be ready for the season. Dallas and the Tennessee Titans have reached an agreement according to ESPN... the Cowboys will send their 4th round pick, #126 overall, to the Titans. For protection the Cowboys added a clause that they get the Titans 4th round pick next year if Jones isn't reinstated by the league. It works out well for the Titans just to get something and get rid of Pacman. The Cowboys take a huge character chance, but what's new. If reinstated and he can quickly get back to form he would be a steal for a 4th round pick. A good corner and great return man he could add some electricity to the Cowboys. Of course he could certainly add some negative electricity as well and of course controversies as if they needed more. As for now it's a push and we'll have to wait and see what happens. It's getting tiring listening to these players and their agents. You want more money fine... go ask your boss nicely and if he says no don't go whining to the media about it http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The Vikings are aggressively trying to improve this off season. At least that is how you have to presume all the money they are spending. Add their newest addition... former Chiefs DE Jared Allen who they have acquired for a 1st round and two 3rd round picks this year. The teams also swapped 6th round picks so the Vikings move up there. As if that wasn't a big enough price to pay the Vikings then signed Allen to a 6 year $74 million monster deal with $31 million guaranteed. Holy #@!% !!! That is a ton of money for a player one strike away from a year long suspension... ok that is a lot of money for any player, over a $12 million average! Will have to wait until all the numbers are released to see how much funny money is in there, but $31 million guaranteed represents over $5 million a year. The deal makes him one of the highest paid players in the league and the Vikings hope playing on the turf makes him even faster improving on his excellent sack numbers which led the league last year with 15.5. The Chiefs now are loaded for the draft. It gives them 13 overall picks and 6 in the first 82 meaning they can move up if they want as 13 is a lot of draft picks to bring to camp, but get younger they will. With the two first rounders they should get a player to take Allen's place and help on the offensive line http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The New Orleans Saints are looking to move up in the first round... all the way to #2 and the thinking is they are after local product DT Glenn Dorsey. Forget the cost of moving up, forget the cost of paying the pick... they Saints have admitted they are looking to move up. It's an interesting move to go up and get one of the premier players. Maybe not the smartest move but they are being bold. A few months ago Dorsey was considered by most to be the best player in the draft. Some injury issues and the usual draft process pushed him down a bit but he is still a force inside. The Rams and Falcons have been contacted as have other teams, but if it's Dorsey they want, it's likely those two teams they will have to deal with. If they can't get there the questions is will they move up for Sedrick Ellis as well http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net As expected the Seattle Seahawks have released RB Shaun Alexander saying it was a difficult decision. We really doubt it was that hard to make after the way he has played since their Super Bowl appearance and his big new contract... that is what made it painful. They knew he was getting up there in years and was coming off a huge year and paid him for it, and paid they did. Alexander will now look for another team, have to wait and see how he feels about a veterans minimum contract with incentives. According to ESPN the Bengals have turned down an offer from the Washington Redskins for WR Chad Johnson... a first round pick this year, #21 overall, and a conditional third round pick next year that could escalate to a first rounder! Also they have told the Eagles and Cowboys they are not interested in trading the malcontent childish receiver. Hey were all for demanding players knock off the cry baby crap, threatening to hold out for the year etc. It's not like Johnson is not being paid well, he is. He can rot while others play the game for all we care, same should have been done with T.O. when he was whining to get out of the deal that had him go to the Ravens to end up in Philly, how well did that work out? First Lance Briggs held out last year and said he would never play for the Bears again... how did that work out? He came back for his franchise tender and then signed a long term deal this year and is happy now... so now it's Brian Urlacher's turn to cause trouble. According to a report in the Sun-Times Urlacher requested a trade and another source told them he threatened to retire... he has since said he never threatened to retire but wants his contract redone as he has outperformed it. He is under contract through 2011 and is playing on a 9 year $56 million deal, but says the market has changed and he deserves a raise. The team has offered a one year extension, but that wasn't good for Urlacher. A big issue is the neck surgery he had earlier this year and the back problems he has had. The question is how many more years does he have in him? He has played in all 16 games every year but one (2004), but will turn 30 before the season. They need to keep him happy but not put themselves at too much risk. With Urlacher not attending voluntary training and possibly training camp if a deal isn't reached it's another year of fun in the Windy City http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net With the draft approaching the Chiefs have decided to shop franchise DE Jared Allen, and there is interest. The Vikings and Bucs are the most interested but the Jaguars could be as well. It's not known what the Chiefs will demand in return, but it will include a first rounder this year and likely a third as well, or better next year. Allen had 15.5 sacks last year and is one of the top ends in the league, but also one strike away from a one year suspension so there is risk in trading away a couple of high picks and of course the huge long term deal he wants for someone that close to being gone. Not that that will stop someone from trading for him. The move would give the Chiefs more options as they could take Vernon Gholston to replace him at #5 and get a tackle with the first round pick they get in return, or get a lineman at #5 - Jake Long if a miracle happened or more likely Branden Albert or Ryan Clady and then target one of the ends or corners later in the first. Steve McNair has announced after 13 seasons in the NFL he has decided to retire. Saying his mind was ready but his body wasn't he surprised his teammates with the news e was hanging them up. That leaves Kyle Boller as the current starter and Troy Smith behind him. Suddenly a quarterback in one of the first two rounds seems a certainty http://www.pfinsider.net/rumors.php PFInsider.net The NFL draft is a crapshoot and the 2008 version appears to be a little more than usual. No true #1 pick, some safer picks, some with more upside.... then there is the one constant, the danger of drafting a wide receiver in round one. Rookie receivers usually do not make a big impact, junior wide receivers may be flashy choices but are even more dangerous. This year the name moving up the charts is Devin Thomas... who? He is from Michigan State and a one year wonder. Let's see a junior with only one year of production, runs fast and has good size.. shoot him up the board.... danger! What about a couple receivers who were consider near the top - Mario Manningham and Malcolm Kelly - both juniors and both falling down the boards. Neither ran a quality 40 time, but they have excuses. Those are part of the problem. Manningham lied about failing drug tests in college, then admitted to it and then sounded like an idiot on a national radio show. He clearly doesn't get it, but it appears NFL GM's do and there is little chance he goes in round one now. Kelly didn't run well and blamed his school for changing the surface he was to run on.... you see he had special shoes and everything. The 40 speed doesn't make them a deep threat. Some have said Asomugha should sign quickly as the big money has dried up in free agency... dumb. The big money deals dried up because there is no one left worth anything close to one. At about that time the offensive coordinator job was open and McCloughan said Mike Martz was not a serious candidate, but guess what he got the job. Now in fairness Nolan still had authority to select his own staff, so that one can somewhat pass. However last week McCloughan said he saw newly acquired WR Isaac Bruce and Darrell Jackson as the team's starters at this point... now a week later the 49ers have released Jackson and the statement from the team only has Nolan's voice praising Jackson. To be clear Jackson was a huge disappointment last year and his making the team was far from sure, it leads to an interesting question about who is pulling the strings. Yes the team surprisingly added Bryant Johnson so someone was likely to go and Jackson may have been the right choice considering he is best as a West Coast offense receiver, but the words of last week make it a bit interesting. What else will be interesting to watch is the style Martz uses this year. He has said he will feature Frank Gore, but it has been a while since he has focused on the run. Also he has never had a great tight end, not that Vernon Davis deserves to be called great yet, but he is talented if not a great natural football receiver. The receivers are also the bigger type Nolan would prefer and McCloughan has even said Martz didn't want a certain type it is interesting that none on the roster fit the small quick type most associate with Martz. Berrian is not a top 5 certainly or even top 10 player at his position, he had one good year and average one the year before. Yes he is an up and coming receiver with great deep speed, but $42 million for 6 years and $16 million guaranteed? Sure the top player at the position gets paid more than he should in free agency, but Berrian wasn't the top player... what about Randy Moss. No one really counted him as they thought he was going back to the Patriots. Now how can Moss accept anything less than this... he certainly deserves to be paid much more than Berrian but the Patriots won't be paying that much. The Vikings really raised the bar on receivers here. On the other side Faneca raises the bar for offensive lineman but he certainly is in the top 3 at his position in the league and deserved to be paid more than all the guys last year, especially ones who haven't even earned a free trip to Hawaii. Faneca got more, but too much more... hint to Moss. Parity exists off the field as well. By the same token these players should be getting more than all the draft picks coming into the league.
