<title>Lions select Jordan Dizon</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions were hoping to land Jerod Mayo in round one, in round two they got Jordan Dizon. He is a bit undersized, but has good speed and will be a good fit in the Tampa 2, Cover 2 defense </articlebody>

<title>Lions surprise at 17</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions have selected reached a little to get right tackle Gosder Cherilus at #17. This is bad, if they wanted to go offensive line theyt should have stayed at #15 and taken Albert themselves! Mendenhall is slipping a bit now, The Texans are possible, what about the Cowboys at #22. We actually like Cherilus a lot but this is early and with Albert there two picks ago it doesn't fit. Cherilus will be a good right tackle but doesn't look like a top left tackle </articlebody>

<title>Chiefs get Branden Albert</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chiefs have moved up from #17 to the Lions #15 to get guard / tackle Branden Albert who many had them taking at #5. I'll say it right now, they have won the draft with Albert and Glenn Dorsey. They certainly have the picks to move around and likely are not done making trades yet. This won't cost much and was smart as someone else could have come up for Albert who shouldn't have lasted this long. A good move for the Lions to gain a pick and only move back two spots </articlebody>

<title>Patriots keep adding at corner</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Patriots have added yet another veteran cornerback to a one year contract, this time Fernando Bryant. The former Lion is familiar with new assistant coach Don Capers from their time in Jacksonville where Bryant was a first round pick in 1999. The additions of Bryant, Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders lessen the holes in the secondary for the Patriots, but they can hardy be satisfied and more help will come in the draft and early </articlebody>

<title>Lions add Chuck Darby</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions have added former Seahawks DT Chuck Darby to a 3 year contract to help fill the void left by Shaun Rogers. Darby played with Tampa before heading to Seattle so both the head coach and defensive coordinator are familiar with Darby and what he brings to the Lions </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions are looking hard at Tampa... and have signed restricted free agent safety Kalvin Pearson to a 3 year $3.5 million offer sheet. The Bucs have a week to match but would get no compensation if they don't since he signed as an undrafted free agent </articlebody>

<title>Browns extend Shaun Rogers</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Browns believe that newly acquired nose tackle Shaun Rogers will be an excellent long term fit and have rewarded him with a new long term deal worth $42 million over 6 years. The deal includes $20 million guaranteed and $23 million over the first 3 years. Rogers has struggled with his weight, consistency on the field and desire in the past and the Browns better hope he doesn't become too satisfied with his new contract and take it easy. He is talented enough to be a star nose tackle just like Ted Washington was for so many years, but he could also eat his way out of the league and into the coaches doghouse rather quickly if not motivated </articlebody>

<title>Bucs sign Teddy Lehman</title>

<title>Duckett heads to Seattle</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>

<title>Jets sign Damien Woody</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The jets added another starting offensive lineman, former Lions guard/tackle Damien Woody. He will line up at right tackle for the Jets and got a 5 year $25.5 million deal with $11 million guaranteed. Woody was a major free agent bust in Detroit and is no lock in New York, though the numbers are bug, by comparison to other deals not as big as the 6 year $31 million deal he got in Detroit </articlebody>

<item>
<title>Rogers moving but where</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>SO Lions DT Shaun Rogers was headed to Cincinnati wasn't he... must be dealing with the Bungals again... or maybe they got smart, hard to say but it appears the trade may have fallen through. Reports out of Detroit say the deal may have fallen through and now Cleveland is possible, no word on what happened but it should get sorted out quick as the Lions need to move him to avoid his roster bonus </articlebody>

<item>
<title>Shaun Rogers gets traded</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions have traded DT Shaun Rogers, but not to Denver... instead the Bengals came a calling and gave up a 3rd and 5th round pick to get Rodgers. They have also resigned LB Dhani Jones </articlebody>

<title>Dolphins looking to trade</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Dolphins are also fishing around Shaun Rodgers as a possible nose tackle via trade. Ferguson is up there in years but a Parcells favorite and the likely choice but the Dolphins are keeping their option open... or showing Jerry Jones they have some to help bring the price down </articlebody>

<title>Vilma on the way out</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>

<title>Lions sign Dwight Smith</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions have signed former Vikings safety Dwight Smith to a 2 year $5 million deal according to the Detroit Free Press. Smith will reunite with coach Rod Marinelli and defensive coordinator Joe Barry who were all in Tampa together </articlebody>

<item>
<title>Vilma maybe on the market</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Jets may or may not be looking to trade MLB Jonathan Vilma, if so look for the Detroit Lions to be actively involved. He would be a perfect fit in their Tampa 2 defense </articlebody>

<title>Lions and Broncos again</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions and Broncos may be closing in on another big trade to kick off the league's new year just like last season... This year DT Shaun Rogers is the main attraction for a Broncos team that is trying to improve the defensive line every single year... Rodgers is a boom or bust prospect and in Denver that could be bad given the history </articlebody>

<articlebody>The Cowboys have signed LB Zach Thomas to a one year $3 million deal according to the Dallas Morning News. He will likely replace Akin Ayodele in the starting lineup. Thomas was highly sought after being released by the Dolphins. The Patriots were very interested and have had great success with veteran linebackers, but the Cowboys won out </articlebody>

<title>Wasting tax payers dollars</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Ah yes tax time is near and the pain of seeing how much money we fork over to cause deep pain in our stomachs. Then of course there is all the good that comes from it, such as members of congress spending the day listening to the he said she said of Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee (don't forget Andy Pettitte too) and now a new wonderful word "Nannygate", ugh what has this world come to? Add to that Arlen Specter grilling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell over the spygate issue, threatening congressional hearings and the league's antitrust exemption. Do these blowhard's not have anything better to do with their days??? Do we not have any serious issues to be tackled in this great country that we have time to bicker and seek headlines with this crap? Hey guys call me when you fix the economy, health care, homelessness in this rich country and a list longer than.... then we can get around to which retired baseball players did what. Other than Barry Bonds the rest of this is ridiculous and makes me not want to pay attention to the sports we all love so much. This country has become addicted to soap opera's and reality crap where everyone wants their 15 minutes. It's not like this is all brand new, the Steelers of the 70s admittedly used steroids and they certainly were not alone but no one is calling to take back their Super Bowl wins. Lester Hayes is probably my favorite corner of all time, but he reported used something to help him get a better grip. Can we all just move on and focus on trying to fix things rather than going over the top about the past. Either way Roger was dominant, the Patriots were superior and as much as it pains us Bonds was a Hall of Famer before they all crossed the line </articlebody>

<title>Martz lands with 49ers</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>WOW now here is a shocker, the 49ers have hired Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator! Mike Nolan must have gone mad, or be desperate to energize his offense. Martz is a great offensive mind, but he hardly meshes with Mike Nolan's conservative grind it out approach. The team also does not have the type of players to really make his system work. It is one of the more surprising moves in a while, maybe since Rod Marinelli hired him 2 years ago. Marinelli was much the same but needed a strong offensive coach, that didn't work too well in Detroit. Well one thing for sure the 49ers offense won't be boring next year. Martz will get to go against his former team the Rams twice a year as well which should make those games interesting </articlebody>

<title>Martz to interview with 49ers today</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>In what has to be a courtesy or cover all your bases move 49ers coach Mike Nolan today will interview former Lions offensive coordinator and Rams head coach Mike Martz for the open offensive coordinator spot. Martz seems so wrong for the job it leads many to wonder about the interview. SOme speculate that Nolan who shares the same agent is doing it as a favor to Martz who doesn't seem to be in demand right now. Martz doesn't fit Nolan's style or the team's personnel and is more than a long shot for the job </articlebody>

<title>Martz not going to 49ers</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>It was a bad report in the first place but it made the rounds, now CBS Sportsline is reporting that Martz has said he 99% sure it isn't going to happen as his agent (who is also Mike Nolan's agent) told him they are no longer interested. Sometimes there is too much reaching for an idea and it spreads like a wildfire without enough people thinking it through. It would have been a horrible decision for the 49ers who need to get it right. The hardest part for the 49ers is getting someone who won't be a head coach again in a year. Most everyone thought Norv Turner wasn't going to get another shot, especially that fast. One year later there was not only one but two teams after him. Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron would be a good choice if he is fired, but a good year and he may get a shot again, we would doubt it but... Martz is heading home now and isn't sure where he'll wind up. His style makes it hard to find a good place. Not that he'd fit with the head coach, but the Chiefs are looking for a new coordinator. Former coordinator Al Saunders ran a similar offense before he left. Wow would that be hard to see, he and Herm Edwards </articlebody>

<title>Huge Shocker</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>A huge shocker in the offensive rookie of the year voting... Vikings RB Adrian Peterson won! Oh wait we kind of knew that midseason. The next big shock comes when the 49ers LB Patrick Willis wins the defensive rookie of the year. The Lions Calvin Johnson was widely assumed to have won the award on draft day, but never count out the running backs who touch the ball more. Peterson was explosive and has the Vikings excited about the future. Now if they can just find a QB to go with him. Browns left tackle Joe Thomas received 3.5 votes of the 50 with the rest going to Peterson </articlebody>

<title>Rumblings about Mike Martz</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The rumors continue about Mike Martz to San Francisco as the offensive coordinator... can't imagine this happening. The 49ers need an established coordinator but he should be a last choice. Mike Nolan may come or go, if he stays it would not be a good situation with both he and Martz together. Also do they want a coordinator like him who may well jump to a head coach opening after a year and then would force them to have 5 coordinators in 5 years. They need experience but also someone to stay a few years </articlebody>

<title>Martz in Motown to start 2008</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>To begin the year Mike Martz is still the offensive coordinator for the Lions. Don't expect that to last more than a day or two though as he is surely a goner. As much as he is viewed as a great offensive guy, buyer beware you better have one tough QB and a good backup </articlebody>

<title>Forever Young</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>In the new reality series, Grandpa's challenge... Brett Favre out did Vinny Testaverde Sunday. Thankfully due to their ages it was a one day series. The Panthers looked good early but just could not hold. Everything just seems to be working in Green Bay, but the next week and a half is huge. Travelling to Detroit for Thanksgiving won't be easy and the Lions are smarting after their loss at home to the Giants. They had plans of winning both and getting in the fight for the division. The following week the Packers travel to Dallas for a Thursday night game against the Cowboys. The schedule gets a bit better after that, but home field advantage is likely going to be decided right here </articlebody>

<title>Can we have some defense please</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>For the second straight week we had a game featuring absolutely no defense. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb picked the right week to have a monster game, connecting with Kevin Curtis for an NFL record of receiving yards in the first half, Curtis finish with 21 of McNabb's 381 yards. Brian Westbrook also went for over 100 yards on the ground in their 56-21 romping of the Detroit Lions who saw their 2-0 start come to a screeching halt! Give their offense some credit though as Jon Kitna threw 446 yards on the day, Mike Martz said he liked him, but all those yards didn't lead to enough points and Martz hasn't been part of a great defense in a long time </articlebody>

<title>Lions win in OT</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions and Vikings went to overtime to see who would be 2-0 at the end of the day. Lions QB Jon Kitna returned to the game after suffering a concussion to led them to the win. He supposedly passed the tests but I thought the NFL was going to be more careful with concussions this year? Neither team showed they wanted to win or deserve it as there were 10 turnovers in the game and the final one by Vikings QB Brooks Bollinger was the dagger as he fumbled a snap at midfield in OT. Vikings starting QB Tarvaris Jackson threw 4 INTs before getting the hook and the Lions ran the ball for a whopping 56 yards on the day... yes Mike Martz runs the offense </articlebody>

<title>Raiders lose to open season</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Raiders lost the opener to the Lions 36-21, but despite the score what we found interesting between the two worst teams of 2006 is the passing performances, 313 yards by Josh McCown was the best on the weekend, and Lions Jon Kitna's 289 yards was 4th. On the receiving end of those yards Raiders Ronald Curry had a great day with 10 catches for 133 yards and a TD. Lions rookie WR Calvin Johnson had a solid start with 4 catches for 70 yards and a TD in a non-starting role. Lions fans shouldn't get too carried away but the Raiders defense was solid last year and for those Raiders if that defense can tighten up like last year they may have some offense to go with it now </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>So much for the talk of 10 wins for the Lions if the third preseason game was any indication. The Lions looked way over-matched against the Colts and not just Peyton Manning, but his backup as well which only 25% of Colts fans can name... ok that may not be nice but how often is Peyton not on the field? His name is Jim Sorgi and in college he went to a prolific passing school of Wisconsin.. oh wait they are a run dominant team. <articlebody>Here is a great article by Fox Sports' <A href="http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7146400?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=5" target="_blank"> John Czarnecki</A> about how the NFL rookie are being paid way too much. "It doesn't make sense that LaRon Landry is the highest paid safety in the game," Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told me. "And that Joe Thomas (Cleveland's top pick) has a better deal than Tom Brady. For example, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed yesterday for less guaranteed money than what Johnson and Thomas collected, and only a moron would say those rookies deserve more than one of the NFL's best running backs... we're right there with you John, good work</A> </articlebody>

<title>Lions to get a closer look at Quinn</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions will take a closer look at Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn. According to the Detroit News they will bring him in for a private visit before the draft. The Lions have really set themselves up well going into the draft. They may not have landed stars at their positions of need, but they added solid players at tackle, running, corner, defensive end, wide receiver and retained Corey Redding with the franchise tag. They can now take the best player on their board. Quinn would be a good pick to groom under Mike Martz but most still believe they will take offensive tackle Joe Thomas, then again never rule out a wide receiver with the Lions and Calvin Johnson may be the best player in the draft </articlebody>

Today he signed a 6 year $32 million deal with $9.5 million guaranteed with the Philadelphia Eagles according to ESPN. He will replace Donte Stallworth who left for New England. Curtis will pair with Reggie Brown in the starting lineup and their challenge will be to see if one of them can do better than third on the team in receiving. <title>Running backs keep moving</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Running backs in the top this year's draft are watching the movement of all the back closely. The New York Giants were in need of a back according to ESPN have traded WR Tim Carter to the Cleveland Browns for RB Reuben Droughns. The Giants wanted a back to paid with Brandon Jacobs after Tiki Barber's retirement now have that spot secured with Droughns. The Browns signed Jamal Lewis to only a one year back which leads to speculation they will still draft Adrian Peterson at number three, but the list of teams that need a back in the first round is dwindling. One team that is left is the Green Bay Packers who have pretty much sat on their hands and watched all the backs sign. Buffalo and Detroit are also still in the market. ESPN is reporting it is the Ravens 3rd and 7th round picks this year and their 3rd round pick in 2008. The Bills come out better than expected getting a pair of third round picks rather than the expectation of one and a late round pick. Look for the Bills to strike quickly signing a replacement. There has been some interest in Corey Dillion but watch for Titans RB Chris Brown who was just in for a visit with the Bills and was next headed to Detroit, who continues to be interested in running backs, to sign with the Bills. <author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The trade can't be announced until tomorrow but according to ESPN the Lions will send CB Dre Bly to the Denver Broncos in return for RB Tatum Bell, ORT George Foster and a 5th round pick. If true Matt Millen will finally get some praise! Bly is a good corner but certainly not a great one, but the Broncos are a in deep need of a corner and do not want to have to draft someone to start right away. They certainly overpaid here, but they did fill a need. The Lions get a solid running back to add security if Kevin Jones isn't ready to start the season and definitely a good backup. Foster will start at right tackle and with Jeff Backus at left tackle that reduces the need to draft Joe Thomas. Bell takes away the need for Adrian Peterson so the Lions can entertain trade offers, select Brady Quinn, Gaines Adams or the best player in the draft... yes another receiver Calvin Johnson </articlebody>

<title>Lions release Ross Verba</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions have released one lineman, Ross Verba who tried to return to the league a bit unsuccessfully. Think he wishes he wouldn't have asked for his release from Cleveland years back and actually buying his freedom? Hasn't worked too well </articlebody>

<title>LB London Fletcher to sign quick</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Look for Bills LB London Fletcher to be a quick sign in free agency. The Redskins are rumored to have a big interest and they have both the need and history of striking fast. They will not be as active as in years past, but this could be a quick one. The Detroit Lions are also interested as will be a number of other teams </articlebody>

<title>Lions tag Redding as franchise player</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions have placed the franchise tag on Cory Redding. That didn't make him happy and even less, he was tagged as a defensive tackle rather than as an end which cost him nearly $2 million. Redding certainly would have gotten a big payday in free agency, but the Lions didn't want him to get away. Don't expect a long term deal to come any time soon, and more than a little animosity is likely on Redding's part </articlebody>

<title>Lions resign Blaine Saipaia</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions have resigned guard Blaine Saipaia to a 2 year deal. He was signed during the season and made four starts. He did well enough to be kept while others on the line are likely to be leaving </articlebody>

<title>Two more to seek a trade in Detroit</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions have told defensive linemen Marcus Bell and James Hall that they are free to seek a trade according to the Detroit Free Press. Add them to Dre Bly and you get the feeling of change in the air in Detroit </articlebody>

<title>Lions assistant gets probation</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Lions assistant coach Joe Cullen got two years probation and must attend AA meetings for his drunk driving and nude driving arrests last year. A touchy situation for the Lions, but we hope it wasn't for Cullen </articlebody>

<title>Lions let Bly shop himself</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Detroit Lions are allowing CB Dre' Bly to shop himself via trade according to the Detroit Free Press. Bly is a solid cover corner but doesn't fit the team's cover 2 scheme. The Lions will look to get something in return for him, otherwise he may be released. Another name to watch to be released is overpriced guard Damien Woody. Over paid from day one and his play has gone down, and he won't be the only one given his walking paper this off seaso. More than a few are likely to get the ax as Rod Marinelli reshapes the roster </articlebody>

<title>Bengals guard Eric Steinbach figures to be popular</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Bengals guard Eric Steinbach figures to be popular and well paid come next month. There are many reports as to teams that are interested, none include Cincinnati who is moving on. The Browns are an obvious team with their troubles on the line and the fact they have plenty of cap room. Peter King had reported during the season of the 49ers interest, though we question that. The Cardinals, Bills, Bears, Cowboys, Lions and Bucs all figure to show interest, among others who will take a look </articlebody>

<articlebody>London Fletcher-Baker is another possibility at linebacker for the Lions despite his age, but Rod Marinell saw with the Bucs they can get production out of older smart linebackers. Kawika Mitchell is younger and would be served well playing on the turf at Ford Field and probably the better long term fit </articlebody>

<title>Lions to target Chiefs MLB Kawika Mitchell</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Lions need to land a top middle linebacker in the off season and the first target will be Chiefs MLB Kawika Mitchell. He will fit the cover 2 defense to team with Ernie Sims on the weak side as head coach Rod Marinelli looks to create the dominating group the Bucs had for years </articlebody>

<title>McNabb not leaving Philly</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Ok NFL rumors are just that, but there is one floating out there about the Lions trading the second pick in the draft for Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. We wonder what that rumor was floating on exactly? McNabb said he is fine with the team and what do you expect him to say, but regardless of his feelings or the team's really he isn't going anywhere. Jeff Garcia had a great run to finish the year and McNabb has had some injury problems in the past few years but he is not going to be traded. Mark that one down and move on </articlebody>

<title>6 new inductees to Hall of Fame</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>There are 6 new inductees to Hall of Fame: Cowboys WR Michael Irvin, Bills RB Thurman Thomas, OL Bruce Matthews of the Oilers/Titans, St. Louis Cardinals CB Roger Wehrli, and two from the veterans' committee: Lions TE Charlie Sanders and Browns OG Gene Hickerson. A nice thing to notice is all of the player each played for only one franchise in their careers. Bruce Matthews played in two cities but the same franchise </articlebody>
