Jets move up

<articlebody>The Jets moved back into round one giving up their 2nd and 4th round pick to the Packers to select TE Dustin Keller. He is a strong receiving tight end / H-back. He will help and is an important key no matter who is the quarterback, the tight end is a key. He is a great addition but they need players and didn't want to give up picks... in the end we like it tho, he should really help the offense </articlebody>

<articlebody>The New York Jets have selected Ohio State OLB Vernon Gholston with the #6 pick... and the green room is empty in New York, how about that. Gholston has the numbers as Mike Mamula did, now can he out produce him in the game. He is good and has the ability to star in the Jets 3-4 he could excel... now will he </articlebody>

<articlebody>The Jets have traded DT Dewayne Robertson to the Denver Broncos for a conditional pick in next year's draft. The Jets have been looking to unload him for a while and better hope he meets the criteria to make the pick more valuable after the previous deal they had with the Bengals fell through </articlebody>

Jets extend Kerry Rhodes

<articlebody>The New York Jets have signed safety Kerry Rhodes to a 5 year extension worth over $33 million with $20 million guaranteed. The Jets are spending big... er huge this off season with the hopes of a dramatic turnaround. That is yet to be seen and in the past huge payouts have not always equated to more wins, however locking up Rhodes is a good move for the team </articlebody>

All safe in New York

<articlebody>The jobs are safe in New York it appears this year in the NFL. After nearly being fired, Tom Coughlin is safe (obviously) and now according to the New York Daily News so is the Jets coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Their owner Woody Johnson isn't looking for a one year turn around. That is good I guess but after spending all that money they better improve! Still it's wise to keep them off the hot seat. One of the worst things would be to spend all that money and then fire the coach the next year only to find the new coach they wanted say the players don't fit his scheme. Notice how long some teams take to transition to a 3-4 when a new coach takes over that wants to go that way. It is easier to switch to the 4-3, but Calvin Pace has shown he didn't fit as well there. If Johnson wants what the Patriots have it is wise to give it some time. The Jets played well over their heads in that first year with Mangini, last year was bad... let's see what this year brings without all the pressure being on his shoulders to keep his job out of the gate... then again it worked well in New York last year didn't it </articlebody>

Jets make nice with Laveranues Coles

<articlebody>The Jets decided to play nice with WR Laveranues Coles, not really nice, but nice... Coles had been upset about not getting a contract extension and the team spending big money on free agents and not taking care of the existing players. Interesting if a team doesn't go into free agency and spend money they are perceived not be be trying to improve... but if they spend too much that's bad too. Not an easy job I guess. Anyway the two sides compromised, and while Coles doesn't get an extension but the team guaranteed the $11 million he is owed in the final two years of his existing contract </articlebody>

Jets sign Bubba Franks

<articlebody>The New York Jets have signed former Packers TE Bubba Franks to a one year deal. Advertised as a 3 time Pro Bowler, Franks was never an elite tight end, rather played on a good team those years and didn't face much competition for the Pro Bowl and was a first round pick. Still he is a solid veteran backup at this point if he can stay healthy </articlebody>

Titans bring back another

<articlebody>The Tennessee Titans are bring back another familiar face, agreeing to contract with WR Justin McCareins. He like Jevon Kearse who came back to Nashville had their best days here and are hoping that helps them revive their careers. McCareins was traded to the Jets but never caught on their and was released earlier this off season </articlebody>

Jets keep signing

<articlebody>The Jets are becoming a free agency team despite what the front office says about building through the draft. They have added former Vikings and Chiefs FB Tony Richardson to help open holes with a offensive line getting new additions too. Thomas Jones should be a little happier this year, now will it show on the field </articlebody>

Jets keep going

<articlebody>The Jets keep signing and spending, adding OLB Calvin Pace with a 6 year $42 million deal with $22 million guaranteed. Pace was considered a first round bust before the Cardinals switched to a 3-4 last year and an injury gave him a chance to start. The Jets are banking that it is his natural position and he will continue to put up good numbers and that it's wasn't a one year thing. That is a gamble with $22 million guaranteed </articlebody>

Jets sign Damien Woody

<articlebody>The jets added another starting offensive lineman, former Lions guard/tackle Damien Woody. He will line up at right tackle for the Jets and got a 5 year $25.5 million deal with $11 million guaranteed. Woody was a major free agent bust in Detroit and is no lock in New York, though the numbers are bug, by comparison to other deals not as big as the 6 year $31 million deal he got in Detroit </articlebody>

Bengals after Dewayne Robertson

<articlebody>The Bengals missed out on DT Shaun Rodgers and now are looking for a less dominant, but possibly better pick regardless, Jets DT Dewayne Robertson. The trade rumors are contingent on agreeing to a new contract and would keep the Bengals as a 4-3 defense where Robertson could go back to a 3 technique he excels at instead of playing the nose as he was in New York. The Bengals are also visiting with Titans free agent DE Antwan Odom </articlebody>

Prices going up

<articlebody>Yes we know the salary cap has risen and the newest free agents are getting paid huge. A couple that stand out to us are Bernard Berrian and Alan Faneca, but for different reason. Berrian is not a top 5 certainly or even top 10 player at his position, he had one good year and average one the year before. Yes he is an up and coming receiver with great deep speed, but $42 million for 6 years and $16 million guaranteed? Sure the top player at the position gets paid more than he should in free agency, but Berrian wasn't the top player... what about Randy Moss. No one really counted him as they thought he was going back to the Patriots. Now how can Moss accept anything less than this... he certainly deserves to be paid much more than Berrian but the Patriots won't be paying that much. The Vikings really raised the bar on receivers here. On the other side Faneca raises the bar for offensive lineman but he certainly is in the top 3 at his position in the league and deserved to be paid more than all the guys last year, especially ones who haven't even earned a free trip to Hawaii. Faneca got more, but too much more... hint to Moss. Parity exists off the field as well. By the same token these players should be getting more than all the draft picks coming into the league. After all remember the #1 pick in the draft this year will be pushing for $35 million guaranteed. Taking that into consideration what is Moss, Faneca or even Berrian worth in comparison? It is easy to see there are some real issues that need to be fixed, but don't hold your breath. Moss... he figures to see $20-$22 million guaranteed tops, but the real questions is who will pay it... New England, Green Bay... probably not, Dallas don't count on it... after the year he had who thought he would have this much trouble finding a contract </articlebody>

Faneca gets paid

<articlebody>Former Steelers guard Alan Faneca felt some pain last year seeing other guards who are not in his league get huge contracts, today it is official and Faneca is now the leagues highest paid lineman getting a 5 year $40 million deal from the Jets with $21 million guaranteed. That is a huge sum for a guard but Faneca is the kind of lineman that makes everyone else on the line better. Certainly the left side of the Jets line just took a huge step up and he will be a major influence on youngsters, left tackle DeBrickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold </articlebody>

Falcons add Erik Coleman

Dolphins add two more

Jets get Faneca

<articlebody>The New York Jets big prize in free agency was Steelers guard Alan Faneca, they got him but he didn't come cheap. They have agreed in principle to a four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million guaranteed according to ESPN. Last year the price was set at $7 million per year for top guards, but none of them were as good as Faneca who sets the bar at $8 million per and over 70% of the deal is guaranteed </articlebody>

Kris Jenkins trade now official

<articlebody>The Panthers have completed the trade of NT Kris Jenkins to the Jets for a 3rd and 5th round pick. Jenkins certainly has the size for the nose and could be dominant in that role if he wants. The Panthers continue the remake after a horrible year. In the deal Jenkins also got a new contract with the Jets for 5 years and $7 million per, with $20 million guaranteed </articlebody>

Saints are active

<articlebody>The New Orleans Saints have landed Jets MLB Jonathan Vilma for what is believed to be a conditional 4th round pick in 2009 that can upgrade to a third. Vilma is in the final year of his rookie contract which kept the cost down. The Saints will try and work out a long term deal now or they are renting him for the year. They also resigned DT Brian Young to a 3 year $12 million deal and linebacker Mark Simoneau to a 3 year deal worth almost $5 million </articlebody>

Jets frontrunner for Faneca

<articlebody>The Jets appear to be the front runner for Steelers guard Alan Faneca. Last year it was assumed to he follow the coaching staff to Arizona but that never materialized and the Jets could use him dearly. They also want Asante Samuel but may miss there and land Kris Jenkins </articlebody>

Vilma on the way out

<articlebody>Linebacker Jonathan Vilma is done with the Jets and it was speculated the Lions would be the team to trade for him to play in the of their Tampa 2, but now it seems the Saints may swoop in and land him </articlebody>

Jets find a nose

<articlebody>The Jets may have found the nose tackle to run their 3-4 defense. They are close to trading for the Panthers Kris Jenkins, who is a serious space eater and dominant player when he wants to be and is healthy. The Panthers tried to trade him last year and this year the price came down and the interest went up as they are busy remaking their roster </articlebody>

The cost for Berrian

<articlebody>The Bears last offer to about to be free agent WR Bernard Berrian was 5 years and $25 million with $8 guaranteed according to the Sun Times. Could have told them that won't get it done. He won't sign for under $6 million per year (pushing $7) and over $10 million guaranteed. Deion Branch got 6 years and $39 million with $23 million in the first three years last year... there is the target </articlebody>

Vilma maybe on the market

<articlebody>The Jets may or may not be looking to trade MLB Jonathan Vilma, if so look for the Detroit Lions to be actively involved. He would be a perfect fit in their Tampa 2 defense </articlebody>

Jets release three

<articlebody>The New York Jets released 3 veterans ahead of free agency; WR Justin McCareins, CB Andre Dyson guard Adrien Clarke. Dyson will get a shot somewhere as a nickel back who has starting experience. He likely won't start but can add solid depth for a team. McCareins was an up and comer a few years ago but he quickly faded away in New York who looked to trade him last year and found no buyers. He cost them a 2nd round pick when he was acquired from the Titans. He will get a one year deal somewhere to try and re-establish himself </articlebody>

Eagles might go shopping

<articlebody>The Eagles could be players early in free agency. Look for them to make a play for Patriots CB Asante Samuel, the Saints are also big players but don't count out a couple of AFC East teams in the Dolphins and Jets. The other target for the Eagles early will be DJ Hackett who would fit the system coming over from Seattle </articlebody>

Wasting tax payers dollars

<articlebody>Ah yes tax time is near and the pain of seeing how much money we fork over to cause deep pain in our stomachs. Then of course there is all the good that comes from it, such as members of congress spending the day listening to the he said she said of Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee (don't forget Andy Pettitte too) and now a new wonderful word "Nannygate", ugh what has this world come to? Add to that Arlen Specter grilling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell over the spygate issue, threatening congressional hearings and the league's antitrust exemption. Do these blowhard's not have anything better to do with their days??? Do we not have any serious issues to be tackled in this great country that we have time to bicker and seek headlines with this crap? Hey guys call me when you fix the economy, health care, homelessness in this rich country and a list longer than.... then we can get around to which retired baseball players did what. Other than Barry Bonds the rest of this is ridiculous and makes me not want to pay attention to the sports we all love so much. This country has become addicted to soap opera's and reality crap where everyone wants their 15 minutes. It's not like this is all brand new, the Steelers of the 70s admittedly used steroids and they certainly were not alone but no one is calling to take back their Super Bowl wins. Lester Hayes is probably my favorite corner of all time, but he reported used something to help him get a better grip. Can we all just move on and focus on trying to fix things rather than going over the top about the past. Either way Roger was dominant, the Patriots were superior and as much as it pains us Bonds was a Hall of Famer before they all crossed the line </articlebody>

Paying running backs big money

<articlebody>Each year some teams struggle with the decision to pay a running back big money. A couple years ago it was the Seahawks Shaun Alexander who got the big deal and has done nothing since. This the Chiefs Larry Johnson held out for a big contract to have a horrible year. Meanwhile the Packers lack of a running game was a huge concern this year, and out of nowhere comes Ryan Grant who was with the Giants during training camp and he now has a 5 yard per carry average. Some thought they should have kept Ahman Green even at age 30, but he has logged only 70 carries this year for the Texans and 260 yards for a huge 3.7 yard average, and wasn't that a concern last year how the last two years in Green bay his average was down. The Broncos have shown it for years that you can get by without a huge contract to a back, though they did pay a bit this year for Travis Henry, and Selvin Young is out-performing him. It is hard to let them go or not pay them, but it can be hard on the future if you do too often as well </articlebody>

Who do you pick in New England this week

<articlebody>Ok so the hardest pick on the schedule this week is the game in New England, does anyone give the Jets a chance? Remember this the Patriots have shown cracks in the last few weeks and Magini knows them. Usually it is a team like this that can slip up the great teams. Ok that said, no they don't have much of a chance and the Patriots who don't need the extra reason to play hard certainly have it from the Jets. If there is one team they want to crush this is that team. They are not talking about the spygate issues, but do you think they forgot, this one could get ugly </articlebody>

<articlebody>The Jets and Dolphins both came into Sunday 0-2 and they fought a tight game that the Jets pulled out 31-28 win despite a late charge by the Dolphins. Jets QB Chad Pennington gutted out a great game on a sprained ankle throwing for 2 TDs and running another in. The Dolphin out gained the Jets 424 to 256 but with the help of a Leon Washington 98 yards TD return on a kickoff the Dolphins couldn't capitalize </articlebody>

<articlebody>In the battle of the backup QBs, Ravens QB Kyle Boller pulled out the win, 20-13 over the now 0-2 Jets. The Jets almost came back from a 20-3 hole but guess who stopped them in the end, Ravens LB Ray Lewis with a late interception in the end zone to seal the win </articlebody>

No tear for Ray Lewis

<articlebody>Ravens LB Ray Lewis doesn't have a torn triceps after all. He told a reporter after the game he thought it was even though he finished the game. The MRI shows no tear in the "main" muscle according to ESPN. Interesting way of stating that and offering no further statement to clarify. According to the team he will be a game time decision, and he told the Baltimore sun he intends to play this week against the Jets, gee you think. He played when he thought it was torn, and probably would have wanted to if it was broken as well. As for how effective he will be, it was obvious watching the game he was playing with one arm, and on one play that may have cost the Ravens a 15 yard penalty for a horse collar tackle when he could use the injured arm and was forced to bring the runner down with one arm </articlebody>

<articlebody>So the Patriots were impressive in the opening win, they better be even more impressive in the their own defense with the league offices this week over the alleged spying during the Jets game.
Barlow on last legs

<articlebody>RB Kevan Barlow may be on borrowed time. He was released by his hometown team, the Steelers, as they made their cuts down to 75 man limit. Barlow was a third round pick of the 49ers in 2003 and in his third year rushed for over 1,000 in part time duty and looked to be the successor to Garrison Hearst. However Barlow despite being a big back was a soft runner who rarely broke the first tackler and danced too much behind the line. The 49ers suckered a 4th round pick from the Jets last year for him and he was cut after the first year there. Strangely the Steelers signed him hoping he could be their powerful compliment to Willie Parker, what were they thinking. They cut their losses early </articlebody>

Great article

<articlebody>Here is a great article by Fox Sports' John Czarnecki about how the NFL rookie are being paid way too much. "It doesn't make sense that LaRon Landry is the highest paid safety in the game," Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told me. "And that Joe Thomas (Cleveland's top pick) has a better deal than Tom Brady. For example, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed yesterday for less guaranteed money than what Johnson and Thomas collected, and only a moron would say those rookies deserve more than one of the NFL's best running backs... we're right there with you John, good work </articlebody>

Curtis Martin officially retires

<articlebody>New York Jets RB Curtis Martin has made it official, he is retired from the NFL. He leaves the game as the 4th leading rusher of all-time with 14,101 yards and five trips to the Pro Bowl. Martin didn't play last year but didn't want to announce his retirement either, starting out the year on the PUP list before going on IR. Kevan Barlow was brought in to help replace him for a 4th round pick, but was a huge waste and released after one year. This year the Jets spent a little more and more wisely to get Thomas Jones from the Bears to fill Martin's shoes. While big shoes to fill, Jones is up to the task </articlebody>

They wanted a corner and couldn't pass up the opportunity to come up and get one. Revis has good size and great speed. Coming out after his junior year he still needs to develop but he has the tools. It was a toss up with him and Leon Hall, Revis is a solid choice. They gave up their second round and fifth round pick and got the Panthers sixth round pick as well </articlebody>

Bears trade Thomas Jones

<articlebody>The Bears have finally parted with Thomas Jones - quite a bad move - according to ESPN. They have trade him to the Jets and swapped second round picks in the process. The Bears send the 63rd overall pick to the Jets and receive the 37th overall pick back which was previously acquired by the Jets from the Redskins. So basically the Bears move up 26 spots in the second round in exchange for a starting running back. Gee I think I like the Jets side of this better. Certainly better than the 4th round pick they traded last year for Kevan Barlow. Now it's time for Cedric Benson to step up in Chicago </articlebody>

Chad Pennington is the starter in New York

<articlebody>The Jets have announced what was pretty much know Chad Pennington will go into the season as the #1 QB on the depth chart according to ESPN. Pennington was a major reason the team had such a solid year under new head coach Eric Mangini. The Jets will continue to develop second year QB Kellen Clemens, but for now the job is Pennington's. He doesn't have the arm strength you'd like, or even close to it, but he is a smart QB and as Mangini knows from his time in New England that is a more important trait </articlebody>

<articlebody>The Baltimore Ravens do not want to lose Adalius Thomas, but they will not use the franchise tag to keep him. They hope to work out a long term contract with him, but with him on the open market some teams are going to be coming with a lot of cash.
