<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Chargers starting center Nick Hardwick is having surgery on his foot according to the San Diego Union Tribune and could miss the start of the season. The recovery time is 4-6 months so at least he will be held out of the start of training camp and would go slow.... best case </articlebody>

<title>Michael Turner gets paid</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Chargers RB Michael Turner was LaDainian Tomlinson's caddy long enough, now it his time to shine. The Falcons have signed him to a 6 year $34.5 million deal with $15 million guaranteed. Though never a starter he has averaged 5.5 yards per carry... over his career! Turner was highly sought last year but the Chargers kept him. This year he didn't look around much and chose to help rebuild the Falcons </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Jaguars have signed former Chargers corner Drayton Florence, who lost his starting job last year to Antonio Cromartie. Florence will likely be the nickel back but would be a solid fill in starter as well, and a nickel corner is key when they play the Colts twice a year </articlebody>

<title>Chargers release three</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The San Diego Chargers have released FB Lorenzo Neal, safety Marlon McCree and tackle Shane Olivea. The first two were expected and Olivea is a mild surprise after losing his starting job last year, he should be a good pickup for another team looking for depth and someone to push for a starting spot at right tackle. Neal is one of the last of a dying breed, a punishing blocker who would rather open holes than carry himself. He was one of the best and has a year or two left in him for some lucky running back who will get to follow him </articlebody>

<title>Bears target Turner</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chicago Bears would like to resign their own free agents, Bernard Berrian and Lance Briggs, rather than go after other teams free agents. It doesn't seem too likely they will get either back. The main target after those two is Chargers RB Michael Turner who would finally get a starting job. Turner will be popular, what will be interesting is if he doesn't sign quick what might happen. There are some good backs in the draft and Turner will look to find a new home quickly, with the Bears both likely and possibly the best spot </articlebody>

<title>Lorenzo Neal on the block</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chargers are looking to trade fullback Lorenzo Neal instead of release him according to the San Diego Union Tribune. Neal is one of the least appreciated players in the league. A throw back fullback who clears the way for the tailback of many teams over his career, never talked of much but he has the respect of the backs he has cleared the way for and all the linebackers who have been cleared out by him </articlebody>

<title>Wasting tax payers dollars</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Ah yes tax time is near and the pain of seeing how much money we fork over to cause deep pain in our stomachs. Then of course there is all the good that comes from it, such as members of congress spending the day listening to the he said she said of Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee (don't forget Andy Pettitte too) and now a new wonderful word "Nannygate", ugh what has this world come to? Add to that Arlen Specter grilling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell over the spygate issue, threatening congressional hearings and the league's antitrust exemption. Do these blowhard's not have anything better to do with their days??? Do we not have any serious issues to be tackled in this great country that we have time to bicker and seek headlines with this crap? Hey guys call me when you fix the economy, health care, homelessness in this rich country and a list longer than.... then we can get around to which retired baseball players did what. Other than Barry Bonds the rest of this is ridiculous and makes me not want to pay attention to the sports we all love so much. This country has become addicted to soap opera's and reality crap where everyone wants their 15 minutes. It's not like this is all brand new, the Steelers of the 70s admittedly used steroids and they certainly were not alone but no one is calling to take back their Super Bowl wins. Lester Hayes is probably my favorite corner of all time, but he reported used something to help him get a better grip. Can we all just move on and focus on trying to fix things rather than going over the top about the past. Either way Roger was dominant, the Patriots were superior and as much as it pains us Bonds was a Hall of Famer before they all crossed the line </articlebody>

<title>The Patriots win</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chargers had high hopes coming into the NFC Championship, but the Patriots drive to perfection continues. LT wasn't able to go beyond the first series, though Phillip Rivers made it the distance. The Chargers made it a long way from where their season started and look to be better next year, but this season seems to belong to the Patriots who even when in trouble, calmly find their way out of it </articlebody>

Smith won out last year when Marty got canned and after a rough start to the year Norv Turner got things under control and the team is back in the playoffs after winning their division. Smith has done a good job at acquiring the talent for the Chargers and deserves the extension </articlebody>

<title>Trouble in San Diego</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>After the Chargers drop to 1-2 on the year it will get hot in San Diego for Norv Turner who has always been seen as a great offensive coordinator but not quite the same as a head coach. QB Philip Rivers got off to a perfect 15-15 start but it wasn't enough as the Packers charged back. Tomlinson had 95 combined yards but still averaged just 2.8 yards per carry and that is not going to get it done. Th's is a team that was 14-2 last year and even though they had a tough schedule to start the season this has been a totally unacceptable start. The players have been at fault in the first two weeks a has Turner, but blame needs to go to the front office as well. Maybe they still make the playoffs and win game, but I think most wouldn't be complaining if they were 3-0 playing Martyball now </articlebody>

<title>The conservative Brett Favre</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Who said the Packers were just going to have Brett Favre manage the game. Realizing they have no running game, 42 sad yards on the day. Favre threw the all 45 times against the Chargers for 369 yards and 3 TDs to tie Dan Marino for another record. More important was the comeback win putting the Pack at 3-0 on the year and dropping the Chargers to 1-2. The Packers put up 14 points in the final quarter to take the 31-24 win </articlebody>

<title>Shane Olivea likely out</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chargers need to get their running game on track Sunday against the Packers but they may be without right tackle Shane Olivea due to his ailing back according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. His replacement is a 6th round pick from last year who spent the season on the practice squad. Hmnn, Packers DE Aaron Kampman may be on his way to some more gift wrapped sacks to pad his numbers with. Don't get us wrong we love Kampman, an all energy guy and great end... but does anyone really consider him a 15+ sack a year guy? We saw plenty last year where he had free runs, blocked by a back or only a tight end. Kampman is solid versus the run as well and if the Chargers can't get LT running today it could get messy in Southern California and Norv Turner's honeymoon will be real short </articlebody>

<title>Never upset the beast</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Never upset a team as good as the Patriots. With all the talk this week about did they really win the Super Bowls and are they really as good as we thought, the coaches took a back seat as the players made their statement against the Chargers. An impressive 38-14 win. The Pats D held Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson to 43 yards as he has yet to get going this year and Norv Turner will start getting some heat as the offense put up only 201 total yards compared to 407 for the Patriots </articlebody>

<title>Great article</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Here is a great article by Fox Sports' <A href="http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7146400?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=5" target="_blank"> John Czarnecki</A> about how the NFL rookie are being paid way too much. "It doesn't make sense that LaRon Landry is the highest paid safety in the game," Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told me. "And that Joe Thomas (Cleveland's top pick) has a better deal than Tom Brady. For example, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed yesterday for less guaranteed money than what Johnson and Thomas collected, and only a moron would say those rookies deserve more than one of the NFL's best running backs... we're right there with you John, good work</A> </articlebody>

<title>Is Michael Turner going</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chargers are still listening to offers for RB Michael Turner and now according to the San Diego Union Tribune a mystery team has offered a first round pick in 2008 for Turner. The team isn't the Titans, Bills or Cowboys who were all interested. The Packers though always mentioned have shown no real visible interest, despite the obvious need. The report states this team would take him have him play this year for the $2.35 million tender he signed and franchise him next year if they haven't worked out a long term deal. His agent is asking for $17 million guaranteed in a 5 year deal. Oh his agent's name you ask? Bus Cook, yes the same agent for Brett Favre. Question What if the Packers got Turner for a first round pick next year, got Randy Moss for a 4th rounder this year or even a 3rd, still had their first and second round picks this year? Wow would a quiet off season take a major step forward </articlebody>

Turner is near a lock to be traded sometime between now and in the first round of the draft on April 28th. <articlebody>The San Diego Chargers have signed rstricted free agent LB Shaun Phillips to a 6 year contract. According to ESPN it includes $13 million in guarantees. Phillips took over the starting job when Steve Foley was shot last summer by an off duty police officer. He turned that opportunity into gold with 11.5 sacks </articlebody>

<title>From a mess to a coup in San Diego</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chargers have hired former Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera as their linebacker coach to go along with new coordinator Ted Cottrell. This is a major coup for the Chargers. They have reloaded quickly a coaching staff that was being
picked apart</articlebody>

<title>Chargers hire Ted Cottrell to run defense</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chargers added a defensive coordinator quickly to go with new head coach Norv Turner when they hired Ted Cottrell to run the defense. He is experienced in the 3-4 defense and is a good coordinator. It is a pairing of good to great coordinators now running the ship. This may allow Turner to focus on the offense where he is best, with the rest of the head coaching part his history doesn't shine, but everyone should get a second chance... oh wait he already had his </articlebody>

<title>Norv Turner is the new San Diego Chargers coach</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Norv Turner is the new San Diego Chargers coach. Will the third time be the charm for Turner? He now has more talent to work than he ever had before, but the job comes with huge expectations as well. The Chargers went 14-2 last year. You have to wonder how it will go over if they lose a few more games and don't win a playoff game! Turner is a great coordinator and maybe he is a great head coach, but his history says no. They lost their defensive coordinator and linebacker coach as well so there are still some challenges to be dealt with. Will be interesting to see a year from now where Dean Spanos is with his decision </articlebody>

<title>Chargers nearing the end of the search</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The San Diego Chargers are conducting the last of their scheduled interviews today with Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs. The only other name that was mentioned early to be interviewed was Jim Mora but he has not been contacted further. AJ Smith and owner Dean Spanos will be making their choice very soon, and an introduction will come by Wednesday at the latest. The early leader is Rex Ryan, but discount the chance that someone who hasn't interviewed will appear and be announced as the next coach as well </articlebody>

<title>Gary Gibbs to get his chance in San Diego</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Mike Zimmer got his turn to interview Saturday with the San Diego Chargers and Sunday will be New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs, who will be the first interview who doesn't have a Super Bowl ring. That's good we thought they were prejudice before. Gibbs doesn't have a ring but he was the head coach at Oklahoma for six years. He and Norv Turner are the only candidates so far with head coaching experience, Norv being the only one with NFL head coaching experience </articlebody>

<title>List of candidates grows for the Chargers</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>When a coaching job opens up a lot of names are thrown out in the media. First the hot assistants and then speculating about coaches who had been there before as assistants and other friends of those in the organization looking for connections. The Chargers job is getting so many names added to their list it seems like we might hear Mike Ditka's name soon. We miss his press conferences, but are not holding our breath. Names are coming from all over and fast including Ted Cottrell and Mike Zimmer </articlebody>

<title>Rivera not lucky with numbers</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>So two teams waited until after the Super Bowl to hire new coaches, sounds good for the assistants with those teams as they usually arrive to late to the party to get a job. So who would have thought Ron Rivera would lose out because he coaches a 4-3 defense? Clearly more popular than the 3-4, but it is possible Rivera will lose out a second time for at least in part that reason. Both the Cowboys and Chargers have too much money invested in running the 3-4 and don't want to change. Rivera is expected to interview Wednesday or Thursday and is still certainly a strong candidate, but he could be pinched by the numbers again </articlebody>

<title>Mike Singletary to interview with Chargers</title>

<articlebody>The San Diego Chargers will first interview 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary in their search for a new head coach. Singletary was is a Hall of Fame linebacker who is great motivator. He doesn't have a lot of coaching experience, but is on the fast track to be a head coach and has been extremely impressive in interviews this year with the Falcons and Cowboys. He has worked in the 3-4 defense with Baltimore and San Francisco </articlebody>

<title>Boom Marty Schottenheimer is fired</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Boom.... The San Diego Chargers have fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer. Figuring that much of the staff was being turned over anyway so why not clear house, owner Dean Spanos changed his mind and made GM AJ Smith happy dumping the horrible coach after Schottenheimer went a miserable 14-2 last year. The feud has been brewing for years and despite his good record we were surprised he wasn't fired right away, not that we'd agree but... Now they will have a very late start to the process of building a staff and expect many teams to block them from hiring assistants at this point. Teams can't block coaches for leaving to become a head coach but that can for any other position including coordinators. We had already said this would be a tough year for the team after losing many coaches, but clearly just became much worse </articlebody>

<title>Shawne Merriman vs DeMarcus Ware</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Chargers LB Shawne Merriman and Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware were debated by teams as the top pass rusher in the draft. two years ago Both were seen as edge rushers who best fit the 3-4. Ware went first to the Cowboys, but Merriamn has had a bigger impact in the first two years in the NFL. In San Diego he was coached by Wade Phillips who now is the head coach of the Cowboys. It will be interesting to see where things are in 2 more years, if Phillips can develop Ware as he did Merriman and who will be seen as the better player after 4 years in the league. Certainly the players around them will make a difference. At this point our money is still on Merriman but expect a big jump in Ware's production and impact on the Cowboys defense </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The dagger has dug a little deeper in the pit of the Chargers. Coaches are leaving at a furious pace and while everyone expected Marty Schottenheimer to be fired he is one of the few who will stay. This could have serious effects in 2007 with the team. They will not enter the off season power polls at #1 like they might have. Certainly they are still a very talented bunch but Marty's job just got that much harder </articlebody>

<title>49ers hire Greg Manusky as defensive coordinator</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The 49ers have hired Chargers linebackers coach Greg Manusky as their new defensive coordinator. Head coach Mike Nolan had wanted to hire an experienced coordinator and interviewed Donnie Henderson and Dave Campo, but decided on Manusky who has never been a coordinator. He played 12 years as a LB and coached for 6 years under Marty Schottenheimer, the last 5 with the Chargers where he coached one of the best units in the league. 49ers assistant Mike Singletary was also consider, but his lack of experience as well hurt him along with the fact he will be a head coach in the next year or two at the most. Nolan is looking for some consistency in the coordinator roles after firing his defensive coordinator this year and losing his special team coordinator and possibly Norv Turner to the Cowboys as well. Manusky is young but a good coach and may have gotten the same job with the Chargers if Wade Phillips goes to Dallas. Nolan didn't get the experience he wanted, but he got an excellent young coach with the valuable experience in a 3-4 defense he wants to run this year </articlebody>
