<articlebody>The Broncos took WR Eddie Royal in round two, while a small receiver he is strong, fast and has good leaping abilities so he plays bigger and stronger than you'd think. We really like him and he should be a great addition </articlebody>

<title>Drafting wide receivers</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The NFL draft is a crapshoot and the 2008 version appears to be a little more than usual. No true #1 pick, some safer picks, some with more upside.... then there is the one constant, the danger of drafting a wide receiver in round one. Rookie receivers usually do not make a big impact, junior wide receivers may be flashy choices but are even more dangerous. This year the name moving up the charts is Devin Thomas... who? He is from Michigan State and a one year wonder. Let's see a junior with only one year of production, runs fast and has good size.. shoot him up the board.... danger!

What about a couple receivers who were consider near the top - Mario Manningham and Malcolm Kelly - both juniors and both falling down the boards. Neither ran a quality 40 time, but they have excuses. Those are part of the problem. Manningham lied about failing drug tests in college, then admitted to it and then sounded like an idiot on a national radio show. He clearly doesn't get it, but it appears NFL GM's do and there is little chance he goes in round one now. Kelly didn't run well and blamed his school for changing the surface he was to run on.... you see he had special shoes and everything. Ok this shoe thing is true of everyone now a days (ugh) but to come out and bash the school was an immature and dumb move on his part.

Why do people get so caught up on a 40 time of someone on a track with special shoes when they have been preparing to run this drill for months. Are they ever asked to run the 40 without pads and in tracks shoes during a game? Jerry Rice ran a 4.55 40 coming out of college but didn't look that slow when the speedy Redskins corner Darrell Green was chasing him... who really cares. I understand it has some value but it is far too overrated. How many times do receivers run in the 4.3s and then you hear people say that team needs receivers you can stretch the field and their current group isn't getting it done. The 40 speed doesn't make them a deep threat. Even better there have been top track guys playing receiver in the NFL and referred to as more of a possession guy... not saying the assessment was wrong but pointing out they were track stars just a couple years ago... NFL speed is different than track speed. Being fast at one doesn't make you fast at the other, get it? There are plenty of teams needing a receiver and some will reach for one, more will regret than will rejoice and fans will be excited in April and forget their names in October... such is life in the NFL in April </articlebody>

<title>Broncos pre-draft moves</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Broncos are making some moves ahead of the draft to shore up a need after Brandon Marshall's injury. They have signed former Chiefs WR Samie Parker and former Seahawk and 49ers WR Darrell Jackson to a one year deals and released WR Derrick Hamilton and tight end Chad Upshaw. They also sign a camp leg in punter Danny Baugher. Jackson's addition could be big if he can regain old form. He spent a miserable year in San Francisco last year where he just didn't seem to fit, get open, or care that much. His production did go up at the end of the year as the team played more of a West Coast type of offense so there is hope he will come back to life in Denver </articlebody>

<title>Hackett heads to Carolina</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The one receiver left in free agency from the start finally found a home, surprised it took so long. Former Seahawks WR D.J. Hackett landed in Carolina with a 2 year $3.5 million deal to help Steve Smith. It is a great move by the Panthers and quite cheap. The receiver he replaces, Keary Colbert, got a 3 year $7.2 million deal in Denver and Hackett is a big improvement over him! Oh pity Denver </articlebody>

<title>Walker lands in Oakland</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>According to ESPN former Broncos WR Javon Walker has agreed to a 6 year $55 million (insane) contract with $16 million guaranteed and $27 due in the first 3 years. In case those numbers sound familiar, Randy Moss just signed a 3 year $27 million deal with $15 million guaranteed. Walker is coming off a year where injuries held him to 26 catches for 287 yards. Just a bad year you say? That may be as he had over 1,000 yards in 2006 with 69 catches but the previous year injury cost him the year and he finished with just 4 catches. Walker's knees are a concern and while he was once viewed as a blazing #1 receiver, that isn't the case right now and he is in no way worth this kind of money, which further goes to show the Raiders have definitely lost their minds and Raiders fans should be more nervous than ever as to what the future holds </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Houston Texans have trimmed their roster a bit before the start of free agency letting centers Mike Flanagan and Drew Hodgdon, TE Jeb Putzier and LB Shawn Barber go. The team had hoped Putzier would be their starter at tight end after Gary Kubiak brought him over from Denver but it just didn't work out that way. Flanagan will land as a valuable backup for a year or two yet and don't rule out a return to Green Bay </articlebody>

<title>Where is Alge Crumpler headed</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Looking for a possible new home former Falcon TE Alge Crumpler may want to check the housing market in Seattle. The Seahawks desperately need a big time tight end and last year made a push for Daniel Graham (who didn't exactly light it up in Denver, 24 catches for 246 yards and 2 TDs). Crumpler could fit right in with the Seahawks and after a quick signing of Mike Wahle they may be able to land two starters before free agency even starts. Of course there will be other teams interested, and if the Seahawks miss out they could target Fred Davis from USC in the draft </articlebody>

<title>Wasting tax payers dollars</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Ah yes tax time is near and the pain of seeing how much money we fork over to cause deep pain in our stomachs. Then of course there is all the good that comes from it, such as members of congress spending the day listening to the he said she said of Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee (don't forget Andy Pettitte too) and now a new wonderful word "Nannygate", ugh what has this world come to? Add to that Arlen Specter grilling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell over the spygate issue, threatening congressional hearings and the league's antitrust exemption. Do these blowhard's not have anything better to do with their days??? Do we not have any serious issues to be tackled in this great country that we have time to bicker and seek headlines with this crap? Hey guys call me when you fix the economy, health care, homelessness in this rich country and a list longer than.... then we can get around to which retired baseball players did what. Other than Barry Bonds the rest of this is ridiculous and makes me not want to pay attention to the sports we all love so much. This country has become addicted to soap opera's and reality crap where everyone wants their 15 minutes. It's not like this is all brand new, the Steelers of the 70s admittedly used steroids and they certainly were not alone but no one is calling to take back their Super Bowl wins. Lester Hayes is probably my favorite corner of all time, but he reported used something to help him get a better grip. Can we all just move on and focus on trying to fix things rather than going over the top about the past. Either way Roger was dominant, the Patriots were superior and as much as it pains us Bonds was a Hall of Famer before they all crossed the line </articlebody>

<title>Bates out in Denver</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Denver Broncos and defensive coordinator Jim Bates have mutually parted ways - a nicer way than to say he was fired after another bad year of defense in Denver. Bates was close to becoming the Packers head coach before the 2006 season after being their coordinator. Bates was highly sought but couldn't produce an improvement in Denver and he wanted out as well. Prior to that he ran the Dolphins defense and he will not have to look too hard to find another job though he certainly isn't on the rounds of head coaching candidates now </articlebody>

<title>Paying running backs big money</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Each year some teams struggle with the decision to pay a running back big money. A couple years ago it was the Seahawks Shaun Alexander who got the big deal and has done nothing since. This the Chiefs Larry Johnson held out for a big contract to have a horrible year. Meanwhile the Packers lack of a running game was a huge concern this year, and out of nowhere comes Ryan Grant who was with the Giants during training camp and he now has a 5 yard per carry average. Some thought they should have kept Ahman Green even at age 30, but he has logged only 70 carries this year for the Texans and 260 yards for a huge 3.7 yard average, and wasn't that a concern last year how the last two years in Green bay his average was down. The Broncos have shown it for years that you can get by without a huge contract to a back, though they did pay a bit this year for Travis Henry, and Selvin Young is out-performing him. It is hard to let them go or not pay them, but it can be hard on the future if you do too often as well </articlebody>

<title>Learn from history</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Memo to you kids out there.. learn from history. Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin watched a win get taken from him last week when the Broncos called timeout just before the Raiders kicked what would have been a game winner, then after the timeout the kick was missed. This week the Browns had a chance to win the game at the last second, but Kiffin called a timeout and of course Phil Dawson made it... on the "real" try.... it was blocked and the Raiders pulled out a 26-24 win. Congrats to Kiffin for learning from last week and getting his first win as a head coach </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Raiders win, the Raiders win... wait the Broncos win, the Broncos win! Who says don't call that timeout to freeze the kicker? In OT Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan called a last second timeout as the Raiders snapped the ball for a 52 yard try to win the game. The kick went through the uprights and the Raiders thought they had beaten their hated rivals, but the timeout came first and on the next try Sebastian Janikowski hit the upright and missed giving the Broncos a second life they didn't waste and Jason Elam booted a 23 yards to win the game 23-20. Raiders RB LaMont Jordan looked good running for 159 yards on 25 carries </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Denver Broncos have signed LB Jamie Winborn and released OT Chad Mustard. Winborn was a rising star in 2004 and 2005 with the 49ers but that quickly changed in 05 when his freelancing style didn't mesh with the 49ers and he was traded to the Jaguars where he had no impact. He signed with the Bucs and played behind Derrick Brooks. Listed at 242 pounds the 5'11 linebackers is more like 215 and plays like a big safety </articlebody>

<articlebody>The Broncos put up some good numbers on offense with QB Jay Cutler throwing for over 300 yards and new running back Travis Henry gaining 139 yards, but two missed field goals by Jason Elam left the game in doubt until literally the last second. With time running out and no time outs the Broncos rushed Elam onto the field for a last second try from 42 yards to win the game. Of course he wouldn't miss three and the Broncos snuck out a win. Cutler was very impressive in the win as well and looks to be ready for a big year </articlebody>

"It doesn't make sense that LaRon Landry is the highest paid safety in the game," Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told me. "And that Joe Thomas (Cleveland's top pick) has a better deal than Tom Brady. For example, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed yesterday for less guaranteed money than what Johnson and Thomas collected, and only a moron would say those rookies deserve more than one of the NFL's best running backs... we're right there with you John, good work</A> </articlebody>

<title>Another lineman coming to Denver</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Didn't we just write that the Broncos always seem to be after defensive lineman, guess they are still hungry for the big uglies. They have traded an undisclosed pick in next year's draft, a 6th or 7th round pick most likely for former first round pick Jimmy Kennedy of the St Louis Rams. Kennedy was a long line of disappointments on the Rams line, but his over-sized frame fits the Broncos plan to get bigger. Now we just have to see if it helps their plan to get better... don't hold your breath. There certainly will be some name lineman released by the team before the start of the season. They drafted Jarvis Moss, Tim Crowder and Marcus Thomas this year. Brought in Kennedy, Sam Adams, Alvin McKinley and Carlos Hall via trade or free agency this year to go along with returning players John Engelberger, Ebenezer Ekuban, Kenard Lang, Elvis Dumervil, Kenny Peterson and Gerard Warren. That's 13 players plus the roster fillers to trim down to likely 8-9 spots </articlebody>

<title>Broncos add some beef</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>A team seemingly always in need of defensive lineman, the Denver Broncos have signed former Bengals run stuffer Sam Adams to a one year deal. Adams is a huge presence inside and able to command double teams, the biggest concern is his staying healthy though that isn't as real a concern as some make it seem. The Bengals defense stunk last year but the passing game was much to blame as they were 15th in run defense. <title>Broncos trade up for Jarvis Moss</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Jaguars traded with the Broncos to move back 4 spots. The Broncos always need a speed rusher, in taking Jarvis Moss #17 overall they got one of the best in the draft. He reminds many of Jevon Kearse and should help get a push and with Champ Bailey and Dre Bly lurking back there they could get a lot more interceptions. it was a very good pick but they paid an expensive price of a 3rd and 6th round pick to move up and get him </articlebody>

<title>Todd Sauerbrun is free for a day</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Punter Todd Sauerbrun is a free agent, at least for now. He won his freedom from Special Master Stephen Burbank on a technicality, what a system. The contract he signed last year with the Patriots included a rights of first refusal clause, but since that was not put in a separate clause and signed it made the clause void due the collective bargaining agreement... don't you just love that? Expect Sauerbrun to sign with the Broncos quickly as the Patriots matched the offer sheet they signed him to </articlebody>

<title>Broncos get rid of a Brown</title>

<articlebody>The Denver Broncos brought in too many lineman from the Browns in free agency previously and today cut one, Courtney Brown. The former first overall pick in the draft in 2000 Brown never made his mark other than to be injured may be done in the NFL. After missing all of last year with a knee injury and a history of injuries that is quite long it may be time to say good bye. The Browns had had horrible luck in the first round since returning to the league. QB Tim Couch in 1999 and Warren were both first overall picks who didn't make it. 2002 brought Gerard Warren who also ended up in Denver at number three overall. The following years brought RB William Green, center Jeff Faine, tight end Kellen Winslow Jr and his motorcycle and then Braylon Edwards. To give them some credit last year's pick Kamerion Wimbley looks pretty good though Denver is plotting for him in free agency in a few years </articlebody>

<articlebody>The Seattle Seahawks have overpaid for... or excuse me signed former Falcons DE Patrick Kerney to a six year $39.5 million deal with $19.5 million guaranteed. Kerney is known as an excellent pass rusher and had not missed a game in his 8 year career before missing 7 games last season with a torn pectoral muscle. He notched 13 sacks in 2004 but that was the only year of the last 4 where he had over 6.5. At 30 years old they have guaranteed a sizable amount for a player that hasn't gotten the production expected of him recently. He has 11 sacks over the last 2 years combined. The Seahawks have to hope he can stay healthy and regain his previous form. He will be reunited with his former head coach Jim Mora, who is now the Seahawks assistant head coach. <articlebody>The trade can't be announced until tomorrow but according to ESPN the Lions will send CB Dre Bly to the Denver Broncos in return for RB Tatum Bell, ORT George Foster and a 5th round pick. If true Matt Millen will finally get some praise! Bly is a good corner but certainly not a great one, but the Broncos are a in deep need of a corner and do not want to have to draft someone to start right away. They certainly overpaid here, but they did fill a need. The Lions get a solid running back to add security if Kevin Jones isn't ready to start the season and definitely a good backup. Foster will start at right tackle and with Jeff Backus at left tackle that reduces the need to draft Joe Thomas. Bell takes away the need for Adrian Peterson so the Lions can entertain trade offers, select Brady Quinn, Gaines Adams or the best player in the draft... yes another receiver Calvin Johnson </articlebody>

<title>Is Rod Smith getting benched</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>We can't remember how many years there has been a need for a #3 receiver in Denver, a position that gets about 20-30 catches a year at best. A report in the Denver post says the Broncos will look to restructure Rod Smith's contract as he is due a $1 million roster bonus and a $5.5 million salary, numbers clearly too high for this time in his career and will be adjusted. But it also reports he could be moved to the #3 spot behind Brandon Marshall, who was an undrafted free agent last year. He had a solid rookie year getting 20 catches and averaging over 15 yards a catch, but he will need to develop quickly to take over the starting role. Don't expect Smith to just role over. There have been a few receivers get talked up in the off season as ready to step up over the years, but come game time they haven't </articlebody>
