<title>Bears get a back</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Bears needed a lineman and a running back and they got the tackle in round one, next they get the back in RB Matt Forte to team with the disappointing Cedric Benson. A quarterback would have been interesting there as well with Brohm and Henne still available and sliding </articlebody>

<title>Bears take Chris Williams</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Bears needed help at tackle and they got that help with Chris Williams, a very good pick for them. Branden Albert was possible as well but played guard, Williams may be safer as he has the experience at left tackle. John Tait can move to the right side. Good move. Running back was discussed but without a line to block Mendenhall wouldn't have gone far </articlebody>

<title>One happy now another mad</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>What is it with the Chicago Bears linebackers? First Lance Briggs held out last year and said he would never play for the Bears again... how did that work out? He came back for his franchise tender and then signed a long term deal this year and is happy now... so now it's Brian Urlacher's turn to cause trouble. According to a report in the Sun-Times Urlacher requested a trade and another source told them he threatened to retire... he has since said he never threatened to retire but wants his contract redone as he has outperformed it. He is under contract through 2011 and is playing on a 9 year $56 million deal, but says the market has changed and he deserves a raise. The team has offered a one year extension, but that wasn't good for Urlacher. A big issue is the neck surgery he had earlier this year and the back problems he has had. The question is how many more years does he have in him? He has played in all 16 games every year but one (2004), but will turn 30 before the season. They need to keep him happy but not put themselves at too much risk. With Urlacher not attending voluntary training and possibly training camp if a deal isn't reached it's another year of fun in the Windy City </articlebody>

<title>49ers get punished</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The 49ers got more than a slap on the wrist for the tampering charge put forth by the Bears over Lance Briggs. Supposedly the 49ers were interested in trading for Briggs last year and contacted his agent to discuss a contract extension. However the Bears didn't give them permission to do that and filed charges against the 49ers. This off season when he became a free agent the 49ers showed no interest and neither did anyone else before he resigned with the Bears for $6 million per. The punishment handed down cost the 49ers a 5th round pick and the Bears and 49ers swap spots in the 3rd round (7th and 12th picks). The Bears were not harmed in anyway and got their man back which they didn't think they would, yet they "get" something out of this... not sure we understand that. Granted it's 5 spots in the third round but still and interesting part of the punishment </articlebody>

<title>Bears add a receiver</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Bears are still looking to improve their situation at wide receiver after the loss of Bernard Berrian to the Vikings. First they signed Marty Booker who is hoping a return to Chicago will help return him to past success. Now they have signed former Redskins and 49ers receiver Brandon Lloyd to a one year deal for the veteran's minimum. The 49ers snookered a couple of draft picks out of the Redskins for Lloyd, but the Redskins compounded the error by giving him a big new contract... after that blew up in their face they released him this year. Lloyd has always been a little too infatuated with himself is hoping a return to Illinois (he went to the University of Illinois when current Bears coordinator Ron Turner was the head coach there) will help him do the same. Don't hold your breath on him making the roster though. While he can make a spectacular catch now and again and get up and let you know about it, the rest of the time he does little as the Redskins so painfully found out </articlebody>

<title>Bears bring back Marty Booker</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Bears have brought back a familiar name in WR Marty Booker who has agreed to a 2 year deal with the team. Booker had 100 catches in 2001 with the Bears choose to come back to where he had known success after being traded to Miami in 2004. The Patriots were also interested in him, but Chicago won out </articlebody>

<title>Bears trade Brian Griese</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>SUrprise surprise the Bears completed a trade for QB Brian Griese, sending him back to Tampa for a draft pick in 2009. If the deal wasn't reached he would have been released later today, but the Bucs as usual love to acquire quarterbacks </articlebody>

<title>Prices going up</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Yes we know the salary cap has risen and the newest free agents are getting paid huge. A couple that stand out to us are Bernard Berrian and Alan Faneca, but for different reason. Berrian is not a top 5 certainly or even top 10 player at his position, he had one good year and average one the year before. Yes he is an up and coming receiver with great deep speed, but $42 million for 6 years and $16 million guaranteed? Sure the top player at the position gets paid more than he should in free agency, but Berrian wasn't the top player... what about Randy Moss. No one really counted him as they thought he was going back to the Patriots. Now how can Moss accept anything less than this... he certainly deserves to be paid much more than Berrian but the Patriots won't be paying that much. The Vikings really raised the bar on receivers here. On the other side Faneca raises the bar for offensive lineman but he certainly is in the top 3 at his position in the league and deserved to be paid more than all the guys last year, especially ones who haven't even earned a free trip to Hawaii. Faneca got more, but too much more... hint to Moss. Parity exists off the field as well. By the same token these players should be getting more than all the draft picks coming into the league. After all remember the #1 pick in the draft this year will be pushing for $35 million guaranteed. Taking that into consideration what is Moss, Faneca or even Berrian worth in comparison? It is easy to see there are some real issues that need to be fixed, but don't hold your breath. Moss... he figures to see $20-$22 million guaranteed tops, but the real questions is who will pay it... New England, Green Bay... probably not, Dallas don't count on it... after the year he had who thought he would have this much trouble finding a contract </articlebody>

<title>Lance Briggs stys with the Bears</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Lance Briggs said he would never play for the Bears again last year after getting the franchise tag... never say never. With a quiet free agent market for him he has resigned with the Bears to a 6 year $36 million deal. So he stays as second fiddle to Brian Urlacher.... but a very rich second fiddle </articlebody>

<title>Vikings get Bernard Berrian signed</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Vikings put in some overtime to get Bears WR Bernard Berrian signed, but they got a 6 year deal done finally. The Vikings other top target was Justin Smith who the 49ers didn't let get on a play for a visit and signed him, so the Vikings were not about to let Berrian get on a plane for Oakland who has been throwing around huge cash. The move brings them an upgrade but Berrian must to a better job catching the ball than he did last year. No word on the dollar amount yet, but it will be a lot, and too much </articlebody>

<title>Bernard Berrian looks to Oakland</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Bears WR Bernard Berrian visited with the Vikings Friday but didn't reach an agreement (probably because he isn't worth what he wants) and is scheduled to go to Oakland today, where the Raiders seem comfortable paying much more tan someone is worth. If Tommy Kelley gets $50 million and Gibril Wilson almost $40, Berrian may just love Oakland </articlebody>

<author>PFInsider.net</author>

<title>Bears target Turner</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chicago Bears would like to resign their own free agents, Bernard Berrian and Lance Briggs, rather than go after other teams free agents. It doesn't seem too likely they will get either back. The main target after those two is Chargers RB Michael Turner who would finally get a starting job. Turner will be popular, what will be interesting is if he doesn't sign quick what might happen. There are some good backs in the draft and Turner will look to find a new home quickly, with the Bears both likely and possibly the best spot </articlebody>

<title>The cost for Berrian</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>

Deion Branch got 6 years and $39 million with $23 million in the first three years last year... there is the target </articlebody>

He would return to a competition for the starter's job with Kyle Orton, Brian Griese would be released. <title>Wasting tax payers dollars</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Ah yes tax time is near and the pain of seeing how much money we fork over to cause deep pain in our stomachs. Then of course there is all the good that comes from it, such as members of congress spending the day listening to the he said she said of Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee (don't forget Andy Pettitte too) and now a new wonderful word "Nannygate", ugh what has this world come to? Add to that Arlen Specter grilling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell over the spygate issue, threatening congressional hearings and the league's antitrust exemption. Do these blowhard's not have anything better to do with their days??? Do we not have any serious issues to be tackled in this great country that we have time to bicker and seek headlines with this crap? Hey guys call me when you fix the economy, health care, homelessness in this rich country and a list longer than.... then we can get around to which retired baseball players did what. Other than Barry Bonds the rest of this is ridiculous and makes me not want to pay attention to the sports we all love so much. This country has become addicted to soap opera's and reality crap where everyone wants their 15 minutes. It's not like this is all brand new, the Steelers of the 70s admittedly used steroids and they certainly were not alone but no one is calling to take back their Super Bowl wins. Lester Hayes is probably my favorite corner of all time, but he reported used something to help him get a better grip. Can we all just move on and focus on trying to fix things rather than going over the top about the past. Either way Roger was dominant, the Patriots were superior and as much as it pains us Bonds was a Hall of Famer before they all crossed the line </articlebody>

<title>Need a QB in Chicago</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>This year cemented the need for a new QB in Chicago. Kyle Orton is a good backup, Rex just needs a change of scenary and the Bears need someone new to run the most important position on the field. That certainly isn't the only concern this off season, but it has to be the starting point. Not sure this leads to Donovan McNabb who would not be cheap to get away from the Eagles and the Bears have to many holes to fill to create more. Not to mention there would be some others interested if the Eagles did put him on the market </articlebody>

<title>Playing video games</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>I swear watching the Patriots these days is like watching some kid playing Madden 08. To say that they are playing on another level than every other team is an understatement. Oh and good thing the NFL moved this game to NBC in prime time as it was much more competitive than the Seahawks 30-23 win over the Bears. And to think they lost their own first round pick next year but as a compensation they get the 49ers pick, which is most likely going to be a top five pick. Without the Dolphins futility it could even be #1, wow that's good because they certainly need the help, ugh for everyone else </articlebody>

<title>Big battle in Chicago</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Sunday night's game gave everyone a look at two elite NFC teams to see if the Cowboys were ready to take the next step. Te answer was a resounding yes! Tony Romo had a great game, but please quit anointing him so early, remember what it got you last year. Romo had a very good game 329 yards and a pair of TDs along with 1 INT. WR Terrell Owens also did well against coverage from the Bears Charles Tillman all night nabbing 8 catches for 145 yards. Ass for the Bears offense (or lack of it) it was definitely the bad Rex and Wrecks could be done this time, and should be. Three interceptions and a feeble running game makes for a tough win and ending in a 34-10 thumping by the Boys </articlebody>

<articlebody>It will be a tough day in Chicago after a long flight home from San Diego after a loss for the Bears. Dealing with the defeat and injuries to boot. Safety Mike Brown could be, can you guess... done for the season according to the Chicago Tribune with a knee injury. Big surprise as he has been unable to stay on the field lately. "It doesn't make sense that LaRon Landry is the highest paid safety in the game," Cowboys executive Stephen Jones told me. "And that Joe Thomas (Cleveland's top pick) has a better deal than Tom Brady. For example, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson signed yesterday for less guaranteed money than what Johnson and Thomas collected, and only a moron would say those rookies deserve more than one of the NFL's best running backs... we're right there with you John, good work</A> </articlebody>

<title>Pis fly in Chicago</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Pigs are flying in Chicago, the river is actually blue and OLB Lance Briggs signed his franchise tender. Well one of three isn't bad. So the 'I'll never play for the Bears again' and holdout to week ten end even before the start of camp. While we applaud Briggs for signing we can't help but wonder if the past months antics were really necessary? It got him nothing in the end but bad press. Who knows maybe he wasn't held enough as a kid and needed the attention. Now things get a little better for the Bears defense and a little less cheer around the NFC North who now will have to face Briggs and Brian Urlacher again for a full year. <title>Cleaning out the garage</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The NFL is taking the summer break and cleaning out their garages... you know how it is you find some embarrassing junk and you pitch it to the curb and hope people forget. The Dolphins cleaned theirs by sending DT Fred Evans packing. The second year player has multiple problems with the law in just over a year, ya that qualifies him to be released. The problem with placing the garbage on the curb is there is always that pickup that comes by and pick it up. Evans may get another shot but the 7th round pick may have also played himself out of the league as his upside may not be enough to get another chance such as another defensive tackle, say Tank Johnson, who certainly will have teams falling all over themselves to sign him. Hope the commissioner punishes the team who does sign him heavily when he screws up next time </articlebody>

<title>Bye bye Tank</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The Chicago Bears finally had enough of Tank Johnson and sent him packing. Getting pulled over in Arizona was the final straw for a player already suspended for 8 games. The Bears stood behind him during the year but finally said enough was enough. It will be interesting to see if this has any effect on other players and their behavior. The Bears now have a gaping hole on the d'line and will need one of the younger layers to step up in his place </articlebody>

<title>Lance Briggs says goodbye to Chi-town</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Lance Briggs says he has played his last game for the Chicago Bears according to Fox Sports. He told them he'd sit out the entire year and will never play another down for them again. Gee I love it when grown men throw a temper tantrum like this. The Bears are not being fair so he took his toys and went home. Just for the people in the cheap seats we'll tell you about the unfair acts of the Bears. They have given him a one year contract for $7.2 million and offered him a longer term deal that averaged just over $4.7 million a year, can't blame him for turning down the long term deal as he is worth more than that, but the franchise tag is part of the business. He said he would take out loans to live the next year and be back. Nice to know he has saved some money, maybe that is why he needs the big paycheck to keep up with a lavish lifestyle that requires a loan now (or maybe he wants to throw some money around like Pacman Jones)? Oh how happy it would make us to see him sit out the year and the Bears to franchise him again and let him sit, say goodbye to your little career. Plenty of players have said they would sit out but only two followed through, Sean Gilbert and Dan Williams... each got paid the next year and both were a bust under that contract... just something for other teams to consider, but few of them learn from history and Briggs isn't likely to follow through anyway </articlebody>

<title>Bears making huge mistake with Lovie Smith</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>The winds are howling in Chicago, mostly from the hot air coming from the Bears ownership. According to ESPN contract negotiations are at stalemate with head coach Lovie Smith. He will likely return to Chicago to coach out his last year. The only question I can ask is how dumb are they? But I guess they are answering that for me, thanks. Lovie Smith is not only the lowest paid head coach in the league but isn't even getting a salary that would make him the highest paid assistant in the NFL. Hard to worry to much for a guy making $1.45 million next year, but after getting the Bears to the Super Bowl it should have been done very quickly (if not long before)! Smith will get paid if he becomes a free agent after next year, but the Bears have been looking for a coach like this for years, now they find one and this is how they treat him? <articlebody>So two teams waited until after the Super Bowl to hire new coaches, sounds good for the assistants with those teams as they usually arrive to late to the party to get a job. So who would have thought Ron Rivera would lose out because he coaches a 4-3 defense? He is under contract to the Bears for a couple of weeks, but they cannot stop him from interviewing for the head coaching job and that gives Jerry Jones a chance to talk with him. Rivera is a respected coach and believes he can get the head coaching job though. We are routing for an end to the search soon </articlebody>

<title>Bears pass rush?</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>What happened to the pass rush generated by the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship game? The Bears front four disappeared in the Super Bowl, getting very little pressure on Peyton Manning. They were a tired bunch even at halftime and didn't do much vs the run either. While Chicago will fault them, it's about time the Colts offensive lineman get some credit. They do not get mentioned much for the work they do in protecting Manning or run blocking. Manning is hardly a mobile QB, and that is being very polite, but yet is always among the least sacked QB in the league. Ask Edgerrin James home much he misses them after running behind the Cardinals so called line last year. They are a quiet but excellent group coach by Howard Mudd </articlebody>

<title>Tough day for Rex Grossman</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Chicago Bears QB Rex Grossman probably would have liked to go to Disney World after the Super Bowl, but after a bad Rex day he better not return to Chicago too quick either. The first part of his stats look pretty good 20 of 28 for 165 yards and a TD. Not a lot of yards but a very good completion percentage. However it was two interceptions in the 4th quarter that doomed them. Add a pair of fumbles included one on the first series of the second half and the fans won't have a pleasant off season thinking of him </articlebody>

<title>Where will Rivera be next year?</title>
<author>PFInsider.net</author>
<articlebody>Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera's contract runs out after the Super Bowl, and while he doesn't want it to be a distraction there is certainly plenty of talk! He will likely be interviewed by Dallas next week for its head coaching job. Interesting as it is even if he doesn't get that job he still may end up in Dallas... as defensive coordinator. Reports are Norv Turner would like him to be the coordinator if he gets the job. While most believe Turner is the front runner, we're not sold on that yet. Rivera doesn't have experience in the 3-4 that Jerry Jones wants to run, but that doesn't rule him out as a head coach it is a bit more so as a coordinator. Rivera is focusing on the Super Bowl for now... but don't believe this isn't distracting him and plenty of others </articlebody>
