Pro Football Insider Mock Draft:
Team
Pick & Insight:
1. Oakland Raiders
QB - JaMarcus Russell - LSU
Russell is a big strong arm QB that Al Davis will love to build a team around. Who else will be on that team is a good question, but Russell has the poise and talent to help lead this team back. An interesting note however is Brady Quinn would be a better fit for new head coach Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp who runs the West Coast offense, but remember who runs the show in Oakland. That said WR Calvin Johnson is very much in the picture.
2. Detroit Lions
WR - Calvin Johnson - Georgia Tech
This will be a tough pick for the Lions. Matt Millen can't win, Calvin Johnson is the best player in the draft and he will be the choice here. The Lions will be happier if they can trade down and let someone else grab Johnson. Though if he becomes one of the best in the league as expected then Millen loses anyway. Have a nice weekend Matt!
3. Cleveland Browns
RB - Adrian Peterson - Oklahoma
The Browns have needs... Quinn wants to play for them, but they may like Russell better, they may have Joe Thomas on the board but based on Russell and Thomas being gone, Peterson is the choice.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
DE - Gaines Adams - Clemson
If Johnson makes it this far John Gruden won't be able to pass him up and will be a great target for Chris Simms, and they may look to move up to get him. If not they would openly look for trades. Never rule out a QB with Gruden but it's not likely, Gaines Adams is plan B if they can't move up to get Johnson or be so lucky as to have him fall to them. Amobi Okoye might get a look as well if Johnson is gone.
5. Arizona Cardinals
OT - Joe Thomas - Wisconsin
This would be a great scenario for the Cardinals to land Joe Thomas here. Seemed like a long shot a month ago, but the 'cards' may fall just right.
6. Washington Redskins
S - LaRon Landry - LSU
Lance Briggs is the target but for now the trade with the Bears is dead. Who know if the Redskins will still have this pik come draft day but if they do Landry would be an excellent choice.
7. Minnesota Vikings
QB - Brady Quinn - Notre Dame
The Vikings need a receiver, but there are questions but there is no value here. Quinn is a great fit in the West Coast offense and the Vikings need a leader at the position.
8. Atlanta Falcons
OT - Levi Brown - Penn State
The Falcons want to get bigger on the line and Levi Brown fits that bill. Amobi Okoye doesn't a need position but Bobby Petrino could be tempted...
9. Miami Dolphins
DT - Amobi Okoye - Louisville
The Dolphins will choose Okoye here on his potential but could go in a number of directions including trading down.
10. Houston Texans
CB - Leon Hall - Michigan
The Texans need a corner and Leon Hall is battle tested and ready to step in and start. Darrelle Revis is neck and neck with Hall, but he'll win out. The Broncos are rumored to want to get this pick to be in front of the 49ers too, or would the Bills jump them to grab Willis?
11. San Francisco 49ers
ILB - Patrick Willis - Ole Miss
The 49ers will choose between Adam Carriker and Willis, but inthe end Willis is a premier player in their 3-4 defense and has great skills and leadership as they saw at the Senior Bowl. They are also looking at moving up or down, and disregard the mock drafts with Alan Branch. Won't happen.
12. Buffalo Bills
CB - Darrelle Revis - Pitt
The Bills need a RB, CB and MLB. It's too early for Lynch and Willis is gone, Leon Hall or Darrelle Revis will go here, whichever is on the board.
13. St. Louis Rams
DT - Alan Branch - Michigan
This will be tough for the Rams who have not had great luck with first round defensive tackle, much less ones known for not giving it their all. But can they pass on Branch here? A rush end may be better but Branch may still be the pick. If not he could easily fall out of the top 20.
14. Carolina Panthers
TE - Gregory Olsen - Miami
Olson follows a good line of tight ends from Miami and the Panthers need another reliable target to help open up Steve Smith.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers
DE - Adam Carriker - Nebraska
The Steelers are in between defenses at the moment and Carrikers ability to play both almost as well makes him a great addition.
16. Green Bay Packers
RB - Marshawn Lynch - Cal
The Packers have to address their running game. Ahman Green is gone and Vernan Morency is no replacement. Lynch will fit the offense and provide a solution to a spot that has been a question mark for the last couple of years. That said the Packers are cautious on character and there have been some issues with Lynch. It is possible but unlikely he could take a draft day slide.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars
S - Reggie Nelson - Florida
The Jaguars need a playmaker in the secondary and that is Reggie Nelson.
18. Cincinnati Bengals
OLB - Lawrence Timmons - Florida State
The Bengals need help at linebacker and in the secondary. Timmons gives them great speed and playmaking ability. Jon Beason is another option.
19. Tennessee Titans
DE - Jamaal Anderson - Arkansas
This will be a tough call for the Titans with Ted Ginn Jr still available, but Anderson is too good a value here to pass on.
20. New York Giants
CB - Aaron Ross - Texas
The Giants need some youth at corner and Ross should be able to step in right away.
21. Denver Broncos
DE - Jarvis Moss - Florida
The Broncos are looking to move up, but if they could stay here and land a premier pass rusher like Moss they would be thrilled.
22. Dallas Cowboys
WR - Ted Ginn Jr - Ohio State
The Cowboys won't be able to pass on Ginn at this spot, Bowe and Jarrett could be in the mix as well.
23. Kansas City Chiefs
WR - Dwayne Bowe - LSU
The Chiefs need to improve their receiving options. Bowe has great hands and plays faster than he times.
24. New England Patriots
S - Brandon Meriweather - Miami
The Patriots need to add an impact safety in the draft and Meriweather has the ability to cover the slot receiver and play the deep middle. Michael Griffin is another versatile safety who could be a solid choice. They would be thrilled if Reggie Nelson slipped here.
25. New York Jets
CB - Chris Houston - Arkansas
The Jets need another corner and Houston shows he has the speed to stay with any receiver running a 4.33 at the combine.
26. Philadelphia Eagles
OG - Justin Blalock - Texas
The Eagles got the needed improvement at linebacker in Takeo Spikes already and now Andy Reid gets to add another big ugly. Blalock can play guard or tackle and will fit right in.
27. New Orleans Saints
WR - Robert Meachem - Tennessee
The Saints got their corner in free agency and now can look for a receiver to replace Joe Horn. Meachem has great speed and good hands.
28. New England Patriots
OLB - Paul Posluszny - Penn State
Posluszny is a Patriot already. A very smart player who moved to inside linebacker last year in Penn State's 3-4 he can play anywhere and be effective. He will add depth inside and take over for Tedy Bruschi in a year or two. This should be a linebacker but if not Poz watch the name of David Harris of Michigan who would fit in real well also.
29. Baltimore Ravens
OT - Joe Staley - Central Michigan
Staley is climbing the draft board. The Ravens already lost one starting tackle this off season and Jonathon Ogden is considering retirement so Staley fits a need as well. Blalock could be a good addition on the right side as well, but Staley can eventually take over for Ogden on the left side.
30. San Diego Chargers
S - Michael Griffin - Texas
The Chargers are looking for help at safety and receiver and Griffin is the best value of the two spots.
31. Chicago Bears
OLB - Jon Beason - Miami
Who knows what will happen with Briggs, but he won't be there in 2008 anyway so Beason would be a good addition for either next year or 2008.
32. Indianapolis Colts
DT - Justin Harrell - Tennessee
So the Colts improved the run defense in the playofffs, but they still must improve. Harrell would certainly help in the middle. Injuries are a concern but he is tough and strong.
