2008 NFL Draft Blog LIVE

  • The Giants continue to address the secondary with USC corner Terrell Thomas...
  • The patriots needed a linebacker and corner and in two rounds they got those spots covered... Jerod Mayo in round one and and in round two they selected CB Terrence Wheatley from Colorado who isn't big but has great speed...
  • The Cowboys didn't need a tight end a few days ago but after trading Anthony Fasano they suddenly had a need and got one in round two with Martellus Bennett...
  • The Packers finally addressed a need, ok QB was a need but a backup... with their second pick in the 2nd round they got a corner to add depth, Auburn's Patrick Lee. He fits the Packers style as he doesn't have great speed but is physical and enjoys being in the receivers face...
  • The Colts finally enter the draft late in round two after trading the pick in round one last season to the 49ers for Tony Ugoh. In round two they got another lineman, center Mike Pollak...
  • The Bucs wanted to get an explosive playmaker on offense and found that player in round two with WR Dexter Jackson of Appalachian State... don't know him... the Michigan fans know him too well as he had a good game to start the Wolverines horrible year last season. He is explosive and will need time to develop but has a ton of ability...
  • Well we called it a while ago that the Packers and Dolphins could go QB, after Brohm goes to Green Bay, the Dolphins took Michigan QB Chad Henne. So much for John Beck who was taken in round two last year. This is the problem with the quick hook on coaches as everyone wants their guys and run different offenses and defenses and ends up wasting top picks and player from the previous regimes...
  • The Green Bay Packers are no longer Brett Favre's team... in round two they added a backup or challenger to Aaron Rodgers... Louisville's Brian Brohm who could have been a top 10 pick i not for a down senior year. He didn't get a lot of help and the whole team struggled. Brohm is a good fit in the West Coast offense, but Rodgers can't be happy.. as if it isn't enough to replace Brett Favre... now he has a high second round pick sitting behind him. The Packers needed a backup as they have nothing behind Rodgers and he has shown himself to be injury prone... a bit different than Favre. Every time Rodgers has gotten into a game he has been hurt either in the game or last year in practice the week after... The Packers got a good pick, a great value but oh boy just like Philly last year...
  • The Ravens get a solid pick in round two with RB Ray Rice from Rutgers. He is a bit of a smaller back but very tough and not just a third down guy...
  • In round two the Titans added DE Jason Jones who is a good power end for a small school guy...
  • The Steelers wanted a big receiver and got one in round two with Limas Sweed, this could be a steal here. He had injuries issues as his wrist injury hampered him last year and in pre-draft workouts but he is very talented...
  • The Jaguars added Derrick Harvey in round one to help their pass rush but it appears they wanted more... they traded up with the Bucs in round two to get Quentin Groves, who is an undersized end and will be a situational rusher. He could have been an every down OLB in a 3-4... interesting move...
  • Continuing theme here in round two, players who a month or two ago thought to be going in the first rounder slide... the Redskins stopped the slide for WR Malcolm Kelly at #51. He was initially thought to be the pick at #11 to the Bills... then that pick was suppose to be Devin Thomas... in the end they BOTH land in Washington for the Redskins, who also got Fred Davis have made a major move to improve their offense and make Jason Campbell very very happy. Kelly was hurt by slow 40 times and his mouth, but at this point he is a great pick...
  • Miami Hurricanes DE Calais Campbell was thought to be a first rounder earlier, but slid until the landed in the desert... The Cardinals stopped his fall at #50 overall. He is a huge defensive end that will fit their 3-4 well...
  • The Eagles got a lineman to start, now they go for more of a need with WR DeSean Jackson, a very small but explosive receiver...
  • USC tight end Fred Davis was thought early on to be a first round pick, but fell to round two and the Redskins scooped him up. He is a good receiving tight end...
  • The Eagles always like to draft on the lines... with their first pick they took DT Trevor Laws. While it shouldn't be a need with all the d'lineman they have taken lately, Laws is a great player. Very good pick and they want to play in a rotation and regardless of Eagles fans thought he will be a very good choice...
  • The Bengals are having issues with a receiver... maybe you have heard about it... In round two they got a small school guy Jerome Simpson. A lot of big name receivers are sitting and waiting and lesser known guys are going higher than expected. Simpson is a good looking receiver but not a quick fix. Then again most times rookie receivers don't make a major impact so maybe that doesn't matter as much as you'd think...
  • The Lions were hoping to land Jerod Mayo in round one, in round two they got Jordan Dizon. He is a bit undersized, but has good speed and will be a good fit in the Tampa 2, Cover 2 defense...
  • Brian Brohm and Chad Henne still available here in the middle of round two and in the next 10 picks there is no team with a big QB need. Will someone trade soon for them? Or do the Packers and Dolphins who pick back to back soon stop someone's slide? The Packers always take the top available and eve with Aaron Rodgers need a backup...
  • The Bears needed a lineman and a running back and they got the tackle in round one, next they get the back in RB Matt Forte to team with the disappointing Cedric Benson. A quarterback would have been interesting there as well with Brohm and Henne still available and sliding...
  • The Eagles have traded down again, this time with the Vikings who came up to get safety Tyrell Johnson, who many were talking in the last week sneaking into the first round. A great addition the Vikings didn't want to see go. Interesting as the Eagles could use a safety and trade a pick that is used on a safety... similar in the first round where Jeff Otah would have been a good pick for them, but they got good value in the trade...
  • The Broncos took WR Eddie Royal in round two, while a small receiver he is strong, fast and has good leaping abilities so he plays bigger and stronger than you'd think. We really like him and he should be a great addition...
  • The Bills needed a receiver and got one in round two to compliment Lee Evans.. they selected James Hardy, a big guy with good speed...
  • The Saints were looking to trade for TE Jeremy Shockey and their second round pick was what was discussed in a trade.. but instead they selected CB Tracy Porter. The Saints needed another corner and he is a good one. Shockey still could be traded but the odds are down a bit...
  • The 49ers selected USC guard Chilo Rachal in round two. Guard became more of a need after Baas torn his pec last week, but he can play right tackle too. They usually shy away from juniors as well. He should have stayed in school but he needed to come out for financial reason for his family...
  • The Ravens keep on trading... the Seahawks traded in to take the tight end they needed in Notre Dame's John Carlson...
  • The Falcons have selected ILB Curtis Lofton who will be a great addition to their defense. They need some help up front to keep lineman off him but he could be a great pick...
  • The Packers do it again... last year no one thought they would take a defensive tackle... this year... well they don't need a receiver... so they take one, Jordy Nelson who is a good looking receiver who wasn't talked about as much as a number of others. How about Nelson and Avery being two of the top three receivers. He is a former QB who is much faster than he timed at the combine. I think Favre just cringed...
  • The Chiefs needed a corner after the first round and at the top of round two they got one in Brandon Flowers who is a physical player who could be a great fit in the Cover 2 defense they run. The Packers were up next and may have liked to get him. The Chiefs are doing amazingly well today, big time winners...
  • Here comes the run on receivers with the second in a row. The Redskins have selected WR Devin Thomas who was a fast rising player but while many had him going #11 overall he lasted into round two where he belongs so we'll be nicer here than we would have at #11. Thomas is explosive but a one year guy and a junior... two things that don't always work in the NFL...
  • The Rams give us a wow! We knew the wide receivers were coming but who... I mean really could anyone have predicted the first receiver to be selected would be Donnie Avery? He was someone we mentioned yesterday to keep an eye on but would have never guessed it to go this way... the most talented receiver in the draft? Certainly not but a small fast receiver who is a return guy as well...
  • The Dolphins got real good value with DE Phillip Merling who could and probably should have gone in round one. A good start to round two...
  • The first round is over and no wide receivers have been taken!!! Now come the quarterbacks... Brohm and Henne should go soon but look for a run on receivers is coming and will be a lot going in round two...
  • With the final pick in the first round the New York Giants selected safety Kenny Phillips, getting a decent value and a pick at a position of need and considering the history of Miami Hurricane safeties it might be better than you think...
  • The Jets moved back into round one giving up their 2nd and 4th round pick to the Packers to select TE Dustin Keller. He is a strong receiving tight end / H-back. He will help and is an important key no matter who is the quarterback, the tight end is a key. He is a great addition but they need players and didn't want to give up picks... in the end we like it tho, he should really help the offense...
  • The 49ers selected DT Kentwan Balmer with the #29 pick in round one. They wanted to improve the offensive line. He will play end in their 3-4 defense. That means Isaac Sopoaga will likely move to the nose tackle spot. Not a great pick but solid. They need to rush the passer and that comes from the linebackers in a 3-4, that may be next as they are up early in round two...
  • The Seahawks need a tight end and round two should be it... USC's Fred Davis could still be there...
  • The 49ers could go with defensive ends Phillip Merling, Quentin Groves or ILB Curtis Lofton has also been rumored by local writers... or this is a spot where some teams could trade up for a quarterback - Henne or Brohm. The Packers up next and QB is possible so the 49ers have a good spot to trade into...
  • The Seahawks went defense but surprised a bit taking USC DE Lawrence Jackson. He is a solid three down end, not a speed rush guy but a a solid every down lineman...
  • The Seahawks are up again... Keller, DT Balmer, or DE's Phillip Merling or Quentin Groves...
  • The Chargers went to the corner in round one taking cornerback Antoine Cason to help shore up their secondary. The Chargers could have gone a lot of ways and took a solid player in a position of need...
  • The Texans needed a tackle and reached a bit for Duane Brown. They missed out on some players moving back they got extra picks and Brown has potential but not likely a premier tackle for the first round but there was growing talk about him lately and 49ers were reportedly looking at him...
  • The Dallas Cowboys traded up after all but not so high... they went from #28 to #25. They used the pick to take CB Mike Jenkins... didn't we mention him a few minutes ago? Good to trade up for him as the Texans were next and likely would have taken them.. then the Chargers who may have as well. Now the Seahawks fall back a few spots and can still get Keller...
  • The Seahawks are up and tight end is a strong possibility - such as Dustin Keller, Kentwan Balmer and Calais Campbell are possible on d'line as well...
  • Holy crap... the Titans have trumped the Falcons and by a long shot.... they have taken RB Chris Johnson at #24 in round one. He is so fast he looks like lightning but way way to high here! Horrible but another team looking to create running back duo's and it is a speed playmaker for Vince, but if they can't throw the ball defenses will put 8-9 men in the box and the speed won't help when he is getting hit in the backfield...
  • The Titans are up and we had Kentwan Balmer who could go here or he could certainly slide out of round one. The Titans very well could take a receiver and have their choice... Vince Young needs help. There are no premier receivers in the draft but with their pick they may start the run...
  • The Steelers wanted an offensive lineman but they are all gone... Rashard Mendenhall was sliding and the Steelers stepped in and stopped that. The Steelers like to run the ball and now he and Willie Parker will be another impressive duo...
  • Well the just about every mock draft including ours (though we had him at #28) had RB Felix Jones going to the Cowboys and Jerry Jones went with it. He is an explosive back who has never carried the load. Neither has Marion Barber, but the two together is frightening...
  • The Dallas Cowboys are up and we are going running back and cornerback.... Mendenhall is a still available as is Mike Jenkins and Felix Jones. They are the prime targets with a receiver to be taken later... wow do they keep falling...
